After doing the full Cliff Walk in the morning, we took a bit of a more relaxed approach to the afternoon, when we did the "10-Mile Drive" along Ocean Drive. Moving along at a leisurely pace, you get ample views of the Atlantic Ocean side of Newport, with many opportunities to pull for the road for additional viewing/photos/etc. The drive also takes you along more of the famed mansions of Newport. The road is busy with hikers, bikers, and sightseers, so take it easy, and keep your eyes on the road at all times.

Driving along this path was the highlight of my trip. We drove once during a cloudy day with light rain and then during a clear sunny day both had its beauty. We loved looking at the homes and making a few stops along the way. Near briton there were kites flying and Del’s lemonade truck to enjoy... stopped at one point to take a dip and enjoy the water.

Ocean Ave has some amazing views of the sea. The waves were rough today and crashed over the barrier because of the storm this morning. There are plenty of places to pull off and take pictures. A must see in Newport.

A nice leisurely drive past some of the most elegant houses, estates, and mansions I've ever seen. The opulence, architecture, and panoramic views that many of these homes have is mind blowing. Its obvious no expense was held back when they were built. Nice to be extremely wealthy. Midway through the drive there is an area to park across from the water and take in the view of the bay. Pleasure and commercial boats pass by on their way in and out of the bay. Many people fish off the rocks, some people fly kites in an open field adjacent to the parking area. Great place to bring your take out lunch and relax gazing out at the water.

We were visiting Newport for the weekend and drove around Ocean Drive during the afternoon. The houses were interesting, though much more grand in Bellevue Avenue than Ocean Drive per se. However the views of the water and sailboats were well worth the drive. We didn’t tour any of the sites but drove onto the Fort Adams site and by the Eisenhower house and USS Bennington memorial. Many people had stopped, spread blankets on the ground or were stretched out on lawn chairs, enjoying the afternoon sun.

This was a highlight of the the VoiceMap audio tour. I so glad we took the tour or we would have missed this.
The natural beauty of this place is a must see.
This is an interesting contrast to the City of Newport and is just a mile or two from town.
I believe this vista rivals the Cliff Walk.

The day was gray and showery so we did the ride. The drive offers some great views of the mansions as well as some spectacular views of the water. There are many opportunities to get out an investigate. We particularly enjoyed the area around the Green Bridge. This is something that can be easily tailored time wise to your availability and can surly be done on more than one occasion.

I started the morning with a Viking Overview Tour, but once I learned my way around Newport, I drove the route again later, stopping all along the way for photos and more in-depth exploration. There are beaches that regular folks can go to, and there was parking available on the sides of the road. Whether getting into the water or just looking at the Atlantic, it was wonderful!

This was a very nice drive. Much better than the cliff walk during the pandemic. Safer and same views. There were lots of places to pull off and get out and distance from others. We packed lunch to picnic. Lots of photo opportunities. The only thing that was bothersome was we had to pull over to let those from the area to pass. We were obviously sightseeing and they lived there. So they would be “in your trunk” while you’re driving.

Yes, Newport's Ocean Drive connects to the southern terminus of Bellevue Avenue, which is the main thoroughfare on which most of the Gilded Age mansions are located.

If you're closer to Bellevue Avenue and the Newport Mansions, then start at the very end of Bellevue Avenue, at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Coggeshall Avenue (see map at bottom of page
The whole drive is ten miles. You can Google a map

Hello We are heading to Gillette Stadium this weekend for the Kenny Chesney concert this is our first time at this stadium. Anyone know where we would like up for VIP seating. From my understanding VIP enters the stadium first before Sandbar. We just don't know where to line up at. can anyone help?

Hi we are taking a trip to Boston and would like to ride the coast home to PA. Heard Ocean Drive in RI is beautiful. Is the Ocean Drive on my way to Newport RI Crazy questions, I'm sure I'll see the ocean but don't know the area and I'm driving

If you are driving along the coast from Boston back to PA, stopping off in Newport, RI to see a mansion or two, grabbing a bite to eat downtown, and driving along Ocean Drive are a must. Newport will take you off the beaten path by about 45-60 minutes each way. Out of Boston I would recommend Route 3 down to the Cape Cod Canal where you can hit U.S. Route 6 heading West to I-195, and then get off on Route 24 just outside of Fall River, MA, and then take RI-Route 114 down to Newport. RI state highway 114 will take you right to downtown Newport and the signage is quite good for locating directions to Ocean Drive. When leaving, look for signs for the Newport Bridge over to the Jamestown Bridge to catch U.S. Route 1 on the west side of Narragansett Bay, which will take you down along the coast of Rhode Island and then into Connecticut.

There really aren't any spots, the parking lot at Brenton Point offers access but the rocks are slippery and once you go in getting up is a problem. going in is best at Easton beach or in the harbor.
there are a few places to pull over and enjoy the view and stretch. But is is a "drive" only.

Where do you start the Newport RI Ocean Drive tour? What is there to see if we drive on our own? Your comments make it sound exciting. Just 72/77 senior citizens who like to walk and take pictures. Thanks you.

We love visiting the Castle Hill Inn and Restaurant on the drive, adjacent to the Coast Guard station. Overlooking the Bay and ocean, the front lawn is the site of numerous concerts during the summer, like a movie scene! Castle Hill Light-house is next to the Inn. The Inn seems to be a "double" of the home on Long Island NY that was the pride and joy of Teddy Roosevelt.

Is there a separate paved trail for cycling or walking? Or do cyclists ride on the street with cars alongside? Are there too many pedestrians to make cycling on the same trail prohibitive?
Written February 25, 2017
This is only a foot path on a rocky ledge if the sea! Padlock your bike at the end of the street at the entrance to the cliff walk.

Hi, Would love to drive this route on my way back from Cape Cod to New Jersey. Is that a possibility? What highway would I have to take to get to Ocean Drive RI?
Thanks in advance....looking forward to this since the reviews are so great.

I absolutely agree with the posting about hopping on 6 to 195 to get to Newport from the cape, but I also think by taking rt 138 vs 114 off of 24 once you get to the general area you will not only get a far more scenic ride going into Newport but you hit a lot less lights. By going that way you also pass by Newport Vineyards which is really fun to stop into, and you come into Newport passing First Beach with a grand view of the Cliff Walk. Its quite lovely.
