Lots to learn here at Fort Adams State Park.

The hours are pretty limited; from 10 AM to 3 PM daily during the Summer. I believe they only open on weekends during the Spring and Fall.

We arrived to the large parking area in the early afternoon on a cloudy Saturday. The parking lot is massive so there were lots of spaces available. Before you enter the Fort, you have to go to the right toward a building where you can buy tickets, snacks and drinks, and souvenirs. There are also bathrooms there too.

We opted to do the self tour ($7 adults, $4 children) but after visiting the Fort, I regret that we didn't do the guided tour ($15 adults, $8 children). Throughout the fort, there are tidbits of information scattered around and a small interior section with some museum-style exhibits and information panels. With the guide tour, you get all of that, but a guide takes you around and tells you about each area of the Fort. In the guided tour, you also get access to additional locations, like the tunnels!

After visiting the inside of the Fort, be sure to head toward the North of the Fort, behind it...you will see some awesome views of the water from there. There were alos a bunch of people fishing there...though I don't know the permit requirements there.

Fort Adams is located at the tip between Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay, with spectacular views! Built to protect Newport sometime after the Revolution, you can take either a guided or self guided tour. There are public restrooms and a nice little gift shop on the premises. Various events take place here, including the famous Newport Jazz Festival.

Fascinating history of the American military and preparations for war. Beautiful location. Well maintained. Take the guided tour, it's worth it to get access to areas not open to the self guided option.

Due to COVID, only self guided tours are allowed midweek. With that, perhaps the guided tours are more worthy but the self guided is uneventful. For admission price, you get a zerox copy of notes to follow while you walk around, outside only, of the compound. Basically, all you see is a deteriorated building with a lot of garbage, bricks and mortar, rotted wood piles sitting inside the gated off windows and doors. There is literally is nothing to see. The history notes were interesting but you could look it up online to read it and save yourself some money. I would not recommend the self guided tours to anyone, especially if you have kids as they will be bored.

We come to Newport often and have thought about taking this tour, but never got around to it before this weekend. What a great experience! Our family of 3 kids and 2 adults cost $40, and it was worth a lot more! Our tour guide was fantastic- not only was he extremely knowledgeable, but he also involved the kids in the tour. Our boys learned how to fire a canon! The fort was very impressive, and it was also interesting to learn about the plans the trust has to renovate it. Our favorite part was going into the tunnels under the fort. An informative and entertaining tour. Highly recommended.

The fort is interesting but lacked upkeep and the historical charm. The inside of the fort was filled with broken items, and seemed to be storage area with everything from a wooden cow to a tiki hut. It would be nice if it were kept with replicas of how things were at that time.

Before leaving Newport to head home we decided to stop and do one of the weekend tours of Fort Adams. We had a great tour and we were so happy we decided to do it. Our knowledgeable and fun tour guide Steve took us through all the different areas of the fort and we even got to go through the tunnels with flashlights, we highly recommend the tour!

A really beautiful site to see from both land and sea. The guided tour was amazing - Steve was phenomenal! So knowledgeable and enthusiastic, you could tell he lives and breathes what he was talking about. The underground portion of the tour was amazing and worth the wait. The views from the top of Fort Adams were some of the best views of Newport. Great all around.

It's nice but just ok. I also visited other forts in various parts of the country. It seems silly to let people walk all around except in the fort without paying a fee. Some of the forts I have visited are free. Not to be cheap but Newport is expensive and while this is only $6 per person, I find it a little annoying to pay for this when everything else so expensive. If you want something cheap to do, $6 isn't bad but the cliff walk is free....

I’m glad we visited while in Newport for the history and views from the top deck of the fort. Most of it you can only poke in to look at, so not too much to see. The historic brochure was interesting to read while moving from point to point.
