It is a nice quiet place to go for a walk and you can see a lot of wildlife but it is a swamp and there are mosquitos, lots and lots of mosquitos. Not my cup of tea.

Great place to explore
Jul 2017
My husband take ours 3 children here on a weekly basis to explore. They always find something new. Sometimes they only go for 30 minutes and sometimes a couple hours. It's very peaceful.

Nice quiet place for a walk that is conveniently located
Dec 2016 • Couples
This is a nice quiet place for an easy walk. Trails are flat and paved, packed dirt or boardwalk. Can use a wheelchair and stroller. In warmer weather, there are turtles, ducks, fish, frogs, etc to view in the water areas. Nice collection and variety of local vegetation to identify and appreciate.

Nice stroller walk
Jul 2016 • Family
This was a great park for a nice stroller walk. There is a boardwalk that parallels Hopkins with views of the swamp. There is also a paved loop behind Billy Wilson park for an easy stroll. Our toddler loved to walk and ride through the park. There are restrooms on site.

Beautiful serene little park, if you can find it you earned the visit. Besides from being beautiful it's teaming with a variety of wildlife.

This is in Amherst NY..Not Buffalo

This is a state owned preserve in the middle of Amherst NY. There is a lovely walkway thru the swamp where you can see muskrats, beaver, mink, turtles, rabbits, waterfowl and a variety of fauna. There are signs along the path telling you what you are looking at like the red maples and the skunk cabbage and irises. There is a bike path that is connected to the wooden pathway and a park and playground at the one end with a parking lot for you to leave your car off the street. It is a very pleasant way to spend an hour or so. The "lake" that is part of the swamp is left over from the glacier that came thru the area 11,000 years ago.

Love the changing seasons from this vantage. Love to take photos here. It's a safe walk regardless of your fitness level.

Take a Little Stroll

Great Baerhe Swamp is a New York State Wetland and is located in the Town of Amherst on Hopkins Road. According to the website it consists of 270 acres of silver maple-ash swamp. We entered the swamp at Margaret Louise Park (right next door with parking and other day use facilities). There is a boardwalk through part of the swamp that runs parallel to Hopkins Road. We have walked it several times in the past and have always enjoyed seeing the turtles and birds. Sometimes turtles come up to the boardwalk and stare up at you (I think someone is feeding them). This week we also saw a mother wood duck and her 10 ducklings. Someday we hope to hike the trails that extend beyond the boardwalk to, hopefully, see more of the swamp's wildlife.
