About
Welcome to the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the only museum exclusively dedicated to the art and artists of Western New York - including famed American watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield. From the moment you first step through our doors, you will be surrounded by inspirational, thought-provoking and world-renowned artwork. The Burchfield Penney features more than 20 exhibitions annually. While many are curated from our extensive collections, we often bring new work into the museum through temporary exhibitions and works on loan. As a result, no visit to the Burchfield Penney is ever the same.

Wonderful Modern Art
Jul 2021
Located at the entrance of SUNY Buffalo State, this is a great gallery for lovers of modern art, esp that with a local flair.

The main focus right now is CHARLES E. BURCHFIELD: WORKING FROM HOME which looks at Burchfield's usage of his home as inspiration for some of his work with finished works, sketches and items from his home/workshop.

My favorite current exhibit is BILL STEWART & A SHAMAN’S WORLD, two artists whose work looks at the fantastical and whimsy. The art is weird and colorful and unique and really goes to my sensibilities.

Other galleries currently showcase "Art In Craft" which has cakes made of fabric, ornate gates and a mixture of other media. Joseph Piccillo room contains graphite and charcoal, mixed media and collage within his depictions of horses, athletes and dancers. Mildred Green's water colors of the Buffalo Harbor give a look at the local area in painting. There are ever changing exhibits of photography and sculpture which are always enjoyable to see.

This is one of the better Modern Art Galleries I have been to not in one of the big cities (like NYC or Washington DC).

A must museum to check out in the area

Nice exhibits, friendly staff

A very good exhibit exploring the COVD themes took up most off my visit, but there was also a nice one featuring a lot of birds which I didn't have time to fully appreciate. The staff was also very friendly, although they were wearing masks, of course, I could tell they were giving me smiles. All in all the best part of my little day trip to Buffalo.

The B-P just re-opened. Visited during the members`weekend. This is one of the best exhibition spaces in any place. The current exhibitions are terrific and are a must see. don`t miss an opportunity for "chicken soup for the soul".

Great small museum

Went for the Burchfield retrospective, stayed and enjoyed the rest of the art. Good place for regional artists that large museums overlook.

Pleasantly surprised
Jan 2020
Decided to go check this out after we decided it was too snowy to venture to our original destination...building is beautiful. Our son is a student at SUNY Buffalo State, so we thought we'd give it a try. Really nice exhibits of some area artists. They have tours available, but we like to venture on our own.

Huge Surprise!
Nov 2019
We have learned to "always ask the docent" to get good advice on other stuff to do, places to eat, etc. Such was the case with our docent at the FLW Martin house. We were lamenting that our brief stop in Buffalo was to solely to visit the Martin house and the Know Museum of Art - which had just closed for the next few years for a major renovation. He said "go to the Burchfield Penney, you'll love it". So we did. And we loved it! In fact, it has caused us to shift our art museum strategy to check out regional artists as we build our portfolio of "great art museums of the world". Burchfield is a very cool and prolific artist and the museum is well curated to mix and match with other regional artists. Our current trip has had a civil rights/women's suffragette focus and there was a small but interesting exhibition on Suffragettes. There was an excellent exhibition on Burchfield that was closing but my guess is this place always has some interesting extra treats.

Beautiful building, incredible art!
Dec 2019
We spent some time looking at some absolutely incredible art by Buffalo area artists of the 19-20th centuries. Really lovely building. Great shop onsite for very special gifts, books, etc. Highly recommended. Some free parking onsite, depending on the day; however, rates were reasonable, as was admission fee of $10USD per adult.

Both the exterior and the interior are stunning. However, the exhibits I have seen are poorly curated. Poor descriptions and displays .. it sad because it could be a stunning venue

Truly Enjoyed
Sep 2019 • Couples
Our first visit and we were impressed with the variety of exhibits. Especially liked Birchfield's color painting showing the passage of time, and seeing some of the exquisite wallpaper he designed. So nice that the galleries focus on western NY artists. Cafe has light refreshments. Gift shop has lovely items. Parking is just $1/hr with a maximum of 2. Admission is reasonable and we were eligible for senior prices. We stayed about 90 minutes and would come again when we are in town.
