I explored this trail with my family during Father’s Day. It blew my mind! Wow!
I was always curious how to get there, whenever we drove the I-190. We couldn’t figure out how to access it. Thanks to the Internet we found out that the former train bridge is now used for cars. Once over this bridge, we turned left and we had a parking spot. If it is ever filled, all we had to do is turn right. There is a park with ample parking spots.

The pier is about 4 feet wide. It’s several feet above the water level, otherwise we would be swimming!

On our left was the Black Rock Channel and on our right was the Niagara River which flows quite rapidly. The day we were here the water level of the Black Rock Channel was way higher than the Niagara River. Every few feet there was an intake and an outtake for the higher water level. It was cool! We had mini waterfalls every few feet and they all looked differently!

I noticed a lot of people fishing here. No wonder that there are so many birds here: Geese, Sea Gulls, Ducks, Herons… They too had a fiesta, catching fish to heart’s content. This is why this peer is named the Bird Island Pier.

At the end of the pier, we had a lovely view of the downtown of Buffalo.

I certainly will come back here again, maybe for my next Father’s day!

Looking for something of a nostalgic outing we decided to "Walk the Pier". I recalled walking the pier to the very end when I was around 15-16 years old and taking our fishing poles. Well since it was about 40 years since that pier must have grown over the years as I didn't recall taking over an hour walking when I was younger. Maybe if I hadn't stopped to admire the Peace Bridge etc it would have been faster. LOL
All in All GREAT WALK GREAT TIME GREAT MEMORIES!!

This is a lovely and historic place to walk where you can really see, smell, and feel the power of the mighty Niagara River. There are birds to watch and in different seasons they are joined by rowers on the Black Rock Canal and people fishing along the pier. In the 19th century, this island was the end point of the Underground Railroad. Many people made their way from fear to freedom here, which gives you something to think about as you walk. Highly recommended!

It was a nice sunny , breezy day. She was able to get a picture if the Peace Bridge , international railroad bridge & the underground railroad placards. It was great they had a snack shop, shelter & picnic tables. Great place to fish also.

On a personal level this walk meant a lot to me. My father and I use to fish here when I was a child. The views of the river, and lake as well were spectacular. The Peace Bridge was a wonderful sight as well. A great way to cool down on a warm summer day.

This is a nice site to walk along, specially by the end of the day. There are several water outlets from one side (lake Erie) to another (which I think is the river current that continues north, towards Niagara). Just be aware if you have young kids, althought there are guardrails on both sides, the gaps are easy to pass over.

When I travel I am on the lookout for places to run that have an interesting view and things to look at. Bird Island Pier certainly delivered. The "pier" is actually a break wall between the Niagara River and the Black Rock Canal that has been improved by adding a sidewalk and railings. It's just over a mile from the start of the pier to the end of the railing. The is a lot more break wall beyond the end of the sidewalk, but it is not improved and, therefore, unsafe.
While on the pier there is a lot to look at to keep the mind occupied - Just across the river is Fort Erie, Canada, you pass directly under the Peace Bridge, and there is an abundance of waterfowl. I visited in late September, so there weren't many boats on the water, although there were some rowers practicing on the canal.
Highly recommend for an experience that is very unique to Buffalo.

If you're interested in talking a scenic stroll solo or with friends - the Bird Island Pier is worth checking out. The path is relatively narrow with the Black Rock Canal on one side and the Niagara River on the other. Nice view of the Peace Bridge from various angles. A sunny Summer day with the sound of the water washing between the canal and river under the walk way can make for a tranquil experience. Only marjor negative was the use of the walkway by a few kids on bikes. Didn't notice any signs banning biking on the walkway, but the path is narrow - just wide enough to comfortably accommodate foot traffic in both directions. The use of bikes on this walkway with no exit is not only disruptive could be potentially dangerous.

A nice walk for a sunset evening. Can get crowded and it's a smaller walkay. I would suggest hitting this in the early evening. It a great way to see the lake as well.

Great walking out the pier. The water splits and you can see the tunnels where the water flows in on one side and gushs out on the other. Beautiful view if the bridge. Bring a lunch and relax. Worth the trip.
