Nice Hike
Sep 2020 • Couples
We started at the peak of the heat for the day.
Some really great views, not only of the valley but look up at the mountains, some great rock formations.
Coming back down was a breeze, quite a few folks coming up, zero trail edict so that was kinda of a bummer.
Overall, we’d recommend just not in the peak heat of the day.
Oh, parking lot is a bit tight.
Enjoy!

Good starting hike

Great hike but in August start early. the ambient temp may be below 80 but the shade is sparse. Take plenty of water, but really, if you go in August, go early

Lovely moderate hike
Aug 2020 • Friends
We really enjoyed this hike, which took us around two hours at a leisurely pace. We went clockwise around the loop, meaning we started going left, and we are glad we did. It meant that at the beginning the climb was steeper and more strenuous, but then the second half was much easier. We would rather have the steep climb going up even though that was probably harder, but safer than having to climb down steep parts of the trail if we had gone counterclockwise. Either way is great. There are some wonderful views from the top of the loop, and lovely scenery all around, including pine trees. This is definitely not an easy hike, but I would say it is moderate depending on your conditioning. Very pleasant. Parking was easy.

Great hike, nice views and a bit challenging

This was a fun hike. It is rocky so would recommend good shoes. Decent vertical climb, the parks service says 800 feet. We took our time and stopped for pictures and it took about an hour and a half. We would recommend.

Awesome Christmas Day Hike...
Dec 2019 • Couples
Perfect hike for a snowy Christmas morning. We went clockwise up the 2 mile loop trail and were surrounded the whole way by picture perfect snow-topped trees and plants and boulders and views...

Parking was not a problem at 11AM (because it was cold and Christmas?) and we didn’t see many other hikers til early afternoon. Just a quiet and peaceful 2 hour tramp up and down the mountain.

Good hike!
Dec 2019
Great time in December. 50 degrees and sun. Trail mostly dry from last week's snow.
2.4 miles in one hour and 5 minutes. Hill climb through the boulders and pine trees. Mostly shady. Went counter clock wise and glad I did. Clockwise will be a steeper and more strenuous climb. Overlooks the valley. Perfect to get some nature and exercise in when you only have a couple of hours. Would do again

Not so easy if you go up the left side.

My husband suggested this hike and I thought the name sounded interesting. We went clockwise, and that means up 700 ft in .75 mile. At times I was climbing rocks on all fours. Got my heart rate up! The way down was so much easier. I later learned we should have gone on the path to the right and going up would have been much easier.

Lovely loop trail for beginners
Sep 2019 • Friends
Great morning hike that’s perfect for beginners/families/lazy people. We came around 7:30am on a Saturday and it took us about two and a half hours to finish it (we got lost and veered off to a different trail before doubling back). It was flat in the beginning and there was a slight incline that involved climbing over some rocks but it’s nothing too difficult. There’s enough signage in the beginning to point you to the different trails but we made a mistake when it was coming back in going down a different trail (totally our bad, we weren’t paying attention). There was plenty of parking when we arrived although when we left, the lot became decidedly more full. There’s plenty of shade if you turn right first when going up the loop, while the descent is sunnier with more rocks and less trees. There was no trash can or restroom at the trailhead. Overall, a fun hike and good way to listen to the trees rustle and enjoy nature.

Popular mid-week!
Apr 2019 • Couples
Fatman's Loop is a great hike for its quick climb in elevation up and around the loop. It takes about 50-60 minutes, depending on your speed, and you will meet other hikers and dogs along the way. Note that if you climb up to the top, you cannot connect to the Sunset Trail (it's closed) due to logging operations heading into late spring/summer.

Fairly easy day hike with rewarding vistas
Nov 2018 • Couples
My wife and I are in our mid fifties and we thoroughly enjoyed our day hike on this trail. There are several beautiful views as you get higher up the mountain but don't let the elevation rise scare you off. It is very gradual if you do the loop counter-clockwise as we did. The alligator bark juniper trees are ancient and gorgeous. You will park in a safe and well maintained lot and walk a mile or so on a trail from the lot to the loop.
Two suggestions: 1- Make sure you have an empty SD card on your camera when you start out because you will be snapping a bunch of pictures. 2- Speaking of pictures, make sure you take a picture of the sign at the start of the loop along with the background so that you can be sure of the trail back to the parking lot. When we finished the loop, we took the wrong trail and ended up having to trespass through a summer campground to get back to the highway and walk back to the car. Thank goodness we had our phones with GPS so that we could figure out where we were in relation to the car.
