We really enjoyed this hike, which took us around two hours at a leisurely pace. We went clockwise around the loop, meaning we started going left, and we are glad we did. It meant that at the beginning the climb was steeper and more strenuous, but then the second half was much easier. We would rather have the steep climb going up even though that was probably harder, but safer than having to climb down steep parts of the trail if we had gone counterclockwise. Either way is great. There are some wonderful views from the top of the loop, and lovely scenery all around, including pine trees. This is definitely not an easy hike, but I would say it is moderate depending on your conditioning. Very pleasant. Parking was easy.

We started at the peak of the heat for the day.
Some really great views, not only of the valley but look up at the mountains, some great rock formations.
Coming back down was a breeze, quite a few folks coming up, zero trail edict so that was kinda of a bummer.
Overall, we’d recommend just not in the peak heat of the day.
Oh, parking lot is a bit tight.
Enjoy!

While this trail claims to be easy to moderate, be aware that there are steep and rocky sections that you will need to carefully negotiate. I would encourage folks to take the two hours to enjoy the hike. Be sure to have water, be sure to be in decent shape, especially for those folks coming from lower elevations. The ancient alagator junipers are interesting to photograph, a lot of great texture and shadows. From the top of the loop, the views of the surrounding Flagstaff area are amazing. Easy to access and extremely close to town.

This hike is closed until Sept 1st. Apparently it was closed because of potential Forest fires. The sign said closed till September 1 but that it might open early. I would say check the government websites but of course those are never updated.

This was a fun hike. It is rocky so would recommend good shoes. Decent vertical climb, the parks service says 800 feet. We took our time and stopped for pictures and it took about an hour and a half. We would recommend.

We live here, and want everyone to know that hiking this trail in the summer is very, very hot. It's facing south and you might as well be in Phoenix!

My husband suggested this hike and I thought the name sounded interesting. We went clockwise, and that means up 700 ft in .75 mile. At times I was climbing rocks on all fours. Got my heart rate up! The way down was so much easier. I later learned we should have gone on the path to the right and going up would have been much easier.

We did the "Fat Man Pass" hike again this morning and enjoyed it as much as ever. The hike is around 3 miles depending on where you start. We hiked it counter clockwise today between 7:00-8:00 AM so we were alone on the trail. Either direction will have you hiking uphill first, then along the side hill before descending. You will need to step up or jump down from some rocks up to two feet round but most of the trail has easy terrain.
This is a good hike for any fitness or skill level.

This is a very satisfying hike through some pine trees, over a volcanic rocky terrain. The kids with us loved the huge boulders that, of course, invited their climbing. A bit over 2 1/2 miles. Our group included a 69 year old lady, a couple in their 40's and kids from 9 to 19. All loved it.

A group of us hiked Fatman's Loop the last weekend it June. It is moderate, in that there is a 600 foot elevation over the 2.4 mile loop trail. You don't have to be a serious hiker, but you will need to be able to handle so up and down. There is a good variety of plant life and small animals (birds, lizards, etc.) and there are deer, elk, black bear and mountain lions in the nearby forest, although we saw none of these (possibly due to noisy kids!). It's a good family outing, and close to Flagstaff.
