My search for an authentic handmade Native American doll was masterfully satisfied by the work of Cathy Smith, owner of the Nambe Trading Post in Nambe, NM. I had seen dolls in museums of the quality I wanted, but they were very expensive and usually antique. Cathy is of Sioux tribal heritage, learning the revered arts of beading, porcupine quillwork, and all aspects of authentic Native American clothing and ceremonial accessories passed down to her from her relatives, and passing those arts down to her daughter, Jennifer Jesse Smith, who also makes fine jewelry that is showcased at the Trading Post. This place is fascinating to say the least! Cathy's expertise and knowledge of authentic Native regalia has been shown in numerous western films, such as Dances With Wolves, and Son of Morning Star, for which she was awarded an Emmy for costuming. The Trading Post is as much an archive of her work as it is a place to find treasures! Her daughter creates beautiful jewelry, and has been an understudy of the arts and techniques of film production as well. Take the short turn off the High Road to Taos at Nambe to visit this wonderful place!…

Very disappointed to discover upon unwrapping my "Ledger Art" after returning home that Cathy Smith had done her painting on a PHOTOCOPY of an 1896 piece of Ledger paper. We discussed the painting and the date while it was still framed. After agreeing to pay HUNDREDS of dollars, she whisked off and wrapped it so it was not discovered until later. VERY DISAPPOINTED and considering contacting the Better Business Bureau and seek out a NM organization the may oversee "Original" Native American art.…

Happened by this quaint little shop on our way to visit Chimayo. Upon entering we were immediately greeted by the friendliest people in all New Mexico. Definitely recommend you stop in to enjoy the rich artifacts, beautiful jewelry, lovely conversation. I’ve been enjoying my earring purchase from a local artist who they support in their store. The local Kakawa Chocolate House sorbet was worth the stop. Thankyou for your warm hospitality. …
