We live on the La Tierra Trail system - and bought our property because of the easy access! It is a joy to hike with our dogs through the piñon and juniper covered hills, in full view of the Sangre de Cristo mountains (and the Jemez and Los Alamos, when you get high enough!). The trail system is well marked and easy to follow. Motorbikes are not allowed on the main trails - they have a special motocross track right off 599 to enjoy. There are several trailheads that you can use to access the main trail system. Bring water, as there is none available - nor are their trash can that I know of.

There are not many horse riders who use these trails - but they should! Most of the footing is sandy or hard packed, with few areas of rocks, so I can keep my horse barefoot. The trails are shared and many people keep their dogs loose, so your horse should be trained for that.

I look forward to seeing you on the trails!

Lots of miles of trail here, but they are all less interesting than those in the mountains on the other side of town. Adequate parking and fewer people make for a bonus though.

La Tierra Trails are a short drive from central Santa Fe. We took one of the easier hike s and enjoyed views of the mountains along the way. Although the trails are dog friendly, ours dove for every bit of shade they could find on the sunny August day. Bring plenty of water (for dogs and humans!), sunscreen and protective clothing if needed. We had a trail guide but found it a bit confusing once we got there, so take good notice of how your planned route corresponds to the signage.

Took a morning walk of about an hour. Before you leave the parking lot, write down the order of the numbered trails you want to take. It can get a bit confusing as you will have to cross and keep switching numbers on your hike. Relatively level walk, with pretty views of the mountains and some of the beautiful homes in the area. No charge for the area.

The Skinny:

Parking - gravel lot, free
Effort - fairly easy, some small hills
Time- up to you
Trails - 35 sections
Bring - a hat, sunscreen, water
Bonus - Doggies allowed on some trails (on leash)!
Also - limited shade, horses and bikers allowed

We wanted to hike while we were in Santa Fe and discovered the La Tierra Trails. This is one really taken care of area. The trails are really well marked and fairly easy if you are in reasonable shape. It's so quiet too which was really nice. On Memorial Day weekend we saw maybe 3 other people and 5 bikers. Some of the paths are very rocky so sturdy shoes area must, don't come in flip flops. The only section I would avoid if you have a doggy is section 8, there is a lot of broken glass due to its proximity to the entrance and fire road. Look out for the desert hare, they are huge and move fast!
