My husband and I love to visit wineries and really wanted to visit this on our recent trip to San Juan Island. They were supposed to be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We went on a Sunday but they had decided to close.

San Juan Island Vineyards is right on the road from Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor.. about 3 miles out of town from FH. The location is incredibly picturesque with the white chapple, buildings and vineyard. During Covid they are not doing samplers, but you can get a glass or bottle. We chose a bottle and they provided us 2 plastic wine glasses that were ours to keep. There was plenty of outdoor covered seating. We chose a red blend. It was not the best we have had, more dry then we like but honestly... the two of us enjoying a glass of wine in the setting was so beautiful.. no complaints. The staff was friendly, tables were spaced far apart. We are happy we chose to stop.

We were surprised by the quality of wine and the vineyard itself is very picturesque! Could sit there for hours, sipping wine. However, like other reviews, the one lady working wasn't excited about her job. Usually those serving wine are full of energy and super bubbly and like to laugh. This place was busy and she appeared to be the only one working so perhaps understaffed but regardless of the reason, it took away from the normal fun experience one expects at a vineyard.

When we pulled up the San Juan Vineyard we all thought we were in for a pleasant afternoon. The Vinyard itself is nothing short of picturesque. The landscape is beautiful, the buildings were quaint and it seemed to have an overall relaxed vibe. That is pretty much where the relaxing afternoon ended. When we walked inside we were given no greeting at all. After standing near the tasting counter for was seemed like an almost embarrassing length of time the woman working finally seemed to take an interested in the paying customers standing in front of her. She very briefly listed off the wines available to sample and then basically continued to ignore us for the rest of the time we were there despite several attempts at small talk and banter from our group.

The wine itself was good. I would definitely say that the sour taste left in our mouths was more to do with the service then the wine. We purchased several bottles of the Merlot (hands down the group favorite) before we left. We thanked the woman and said goodbye as we were leaving, although looking back I'm not sure why we bothered. Our thank you's were met with an "uh hu" and she kept her head down the whole time. At $20 a bottle, I would have thought she could have mustered up enough enthusiasm for a "your welcome", a "have a nice day" or even a smile. They themselves advertise that they are the only Vinyard on the island. Maybe this affords them luxury of poor customer service.

The following day we were browsing the wine selection at Kings Market in Friday Harbor and we spotted the bottle of Merlot from the day before. These bottles were on sale and $5 cheaper than the Vineyard themselves.

My overall advise is to skip the winery, head straight to Kings Market. You'll save yourself 25% and receive kinder words from the employees at the market.

I love the San Juan Islands and love Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor and have being coming up here for over 20 years and have to say pass on the San Juan Vineyard. The owner is a very unhappy women who feels her wine is Gods gift. The wine is ok and if you truly want their wine go to Kings market but pass on the unpleasant stop, she can ruin your whole experience and someone I would rather never meet again. She can't run a vineyard and defiantly has no customer service. The Staff is great but the Owner is rude and simply mean unpleasant person.

I've stopped at this vineyard several times and have enjoyed the grounds and the wines. This last visit I took my Mother-in-law to visit Orcas and San Juan to wine taste and explore. It was a Sunday afternoon about 2pm and we pulled in with another couple. My MIL walked in and asked to try the Chardonnay. The woman behind the counter told her she didn't have any available to try and to read the sign that ONLY 4 bottles were left. My MIL in surprise to find this out jokingly replied, "you are kidding me." The woman replied, "No, I am not kidding." This set the stage for the remaining time we spent in the tasting room... I asked for a tasting for my MIL and myself. While we tried to enjoy our tasting I witnessed her abrasive behavior continue to spill over onto other customers. My MIL didn't even finish her tasting and walked out. I purchased one of the Chardonnay's since I was already familiar with it in the past. After we left and feeling terrible about our experience. I wished that I didn't purchase the wine. We are not new to how vineyards operate and usually enjoy supporting the local growers. The poor customer service is not acceptable. Inform your employees on how to treat your customers or potential investors of your business.

I'm not one to be negative but this visit left a poor taste in my mouth. We arrived eight minutes before closing and let the owner and another individual who was working know we were just in to buy a bottle of wine and would honor their 5pm closing time. I have kids who work in the hotel/restaurant industry and I know what it's like when they are ready to call it a night and go home. These folks were abrupt to the point of being rude. Even after congratulating them on a recent award, there wasn't a smile to be seen.

Their wine is decent but their customer service leaves a poor taste in the mouth. They're about the only wine gig with a vineyard in town, so I guess they've figured out that closing time is closing time. Too bad... it's a beautiful property on a beautiful island.

Yvonne: "I am the owner of San Juan Vineyards, and am responding to a couple of recent, poor reviews. I've spoken to my tasting room personnel regarding the situations that resulted in the poor reviews."

Well, Yvonne, that didn't work. We were there (again) on Saturday and the tasting room staff (a woman in a black and white striped dress) was incredibly RUDE. She was VERY rude to nearly everyone in our party. She dismissed our questions about floor merchandise, and snapped at us when we said we preferred white wine for our tasting. She said, "White wine? That doesn't tell me anything! What KIND of white wine?" We were a party of 9 and were ready to buy. We ended up leaving before we even tasted.

This was a our 2nd trip to this winery - we were giving it another chance -and it was the same experience as the last time. The OWNER should have yet another customer service class, then install a camera in the tasting room to watch her staff -- or spend some time there herself. I have never had such a bad experience at a winery.

Drive by this one and go to the SAN JUAN DISTILLERY out by Roche Harbor! They are FUN, polite, and he tastings are free! They are what Customer service is ALL ABOUT! We spent our money THERE.

I'm aware of the Saturday situation. And, I was there working with a group on the porch, and I don't know if you were there then or when I had to take care of other duties. It was a busy day, but that's no excuse for poor customer service. I've been working diligently with this employee. She is working hard to improve her overall rapport. The tasting room is small, and when larger groups come in, it is difficult. When we are aware of a group of 8 or more coming in, we do work to make a special seating accommodation on the porch, so the customers can visit with one another while tasting, move back and forth from the porch to the tasting room. I was on the grounds all day on Saturday, and wish I would have been in the tasting room when you were there. Please, if you are a group coming to the vineyard, do let us know ahead of time.

The wine itself is not bad. It's probably in the 3 to 4 star range. We bought a few bottles to bring home. However, the lady that helped us seemed annoyed that we wanted to do a wine tasting and even more annoyed by questions we asked (such as if they distribute off the island). When we had any questions about the wines themselves, she had no answers, but rather referred us to the info paragraph/description on the tasting sheet. She was the least informative person we have ever encountered at a tasting anywhere. I would not tell you to rule out the tasting, but I would say maybe try the tasting room in downtown Friday Harbor, as they are likely friendlier and hopefully have more to share about their wines. Tastings were $1 per sample.

We went here for the first time in 2015 which was our very first visit to the island. We came back with our 3 kids in 2017. Once we needed to get wine for our trip we stopped here. I tried ALL of the wines, in which it states that after 4 or 6 wines it's a straight up fee of $5 for tastings as long as you purchase a certain amount of bottles. In which we purchased 6 bottles and it cost $120.

Which at first I was like ok maybe it was more than I expected. I gave her my credit card in disbelief. Once I went out to the vehicle and calculated the costs I knew it was wrong and should have been $69. But it would be $20 for all of the tastings but should have been waived since I purchased 6 bottles. Right ?

I went back inside and found out that lady was new. ( not her fault ) what she did was piggy back on top of another order. That's why it was so much. I eventually got my money back in 5 days. Took a while.

The wine is good here, the service is great, but just be sure before you provide your credit card.

I will come back. But it is for sale I noticed. Hopefully it's here when we return in 2019.

Thank you for the review. We charge $5 for 3 tastes, and yes you can taste more. If you purchase $40 or more per person, the tasting fee is waived. A six pack purchase can run from cheapest $9 a bottle upward with the average being $100 to $120. So, on a purchase of $90 you would receive back two tasting fees ($10). I've never had a situation where it took 5 days to return $$. The correction would have been made at the time ??? I'll check on this. I'm on site 90% of the time, and am working diligently with my staff making sure "customer service" is absolute #1. Thank you for your visit, and hope you will return again.
