IMA (San Juan Islands Museum of Art)

A short walk from the ferry, IMA is the first art museum in the San Juan Islands. Along with a revolving repertoire of major exhibits of fine visual arts and workshops, IMA also offers a forum for local artists to display their work as part of its Artists Registry.

IMA raises and distributes money to support art in the Friday Harbor elementary and middle schools, and runs the popular free "Family Art Days" program every Saturday in July and August in the orchard beside the museum.

IMA is a registered 501 C 3 nonprofit organization and depends on donations, memberships, fundraising and a cadre of experienced, capable and dedicated volunteers.

I was lucky and saw a great exhibit, but I live in a city far larger that has equal if not worse exhibits. For a museum and place of this size, the museum is a gem for art loving visitors. Not sure if I would have enjoyed the museum with an exhibit of different medium, but I would recommend checking... More

I love Ansel Adams as much as anyone, but $10 to view two room of black and white photographs is excessive. The photos are nice , and well displayed, and the movie upstairs was interesting, but..............do they really need "security"? One tip: Go between 3 and 6 and it's free.

I went to this museum to see 'Fragile Waters', a photography exhibit featuring work from Ansel Adams, Ernest Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly. Very happy to see such a high quality exhibit on this small island. The museum itself is new, well-organized, well-lit and beautifully presented, with friendly staff. I found the petite size to be an advantage -... More

My wife and I enjoyed looking at the exhibits and seeing the different rooms there. I didn't find any of the art crazy beautiful, but a good museum if you're in town and like to check out local art.

IMA has produced over a decade of exhibitions and lectures at various locations but now this newly built museum gives artistic culture a permanent home. Be sure to stop by when you are in Friday Harbor. The museum is only 6 blocks up Spring St from the waterfront. There are 3 different exhibition spaces that are usually curated for 3... More

This is quite the surprise when it comes to a small museum. We were able to see Michael Dailey's work and it was stunning. The woman on the desk, Patricia Bolding was full of knowledge and passionate about art; what a joy. I was able to buy a book @ Michael Dailey that wasn't available any where else. What a... More

I visited this museum for the first time, It is a very small museum, but well worth the time spent there. The scale was right for a small community, a friendly, fun, attractive attraction.
