Whale Watching from Friday Harbor

The waters surrounding San Juan Island are full of salmon, the primary food source of orca whales, making it an ideal location for whale watching. With this tour, set out on a boat equipped with a heated cabin and large viewing windows to look for killer whales in their natural habitat. San Juan Island is rich in wildlife, and minke, humpback, and gray whales can also often be seen in the area.

When I discovered that I was staying just 2 miles from Westcott Bay Oysters, I arranged to pick up shellfish on the two days of the week they are open for business. The first day I ordered Manila clams and a dozen Salty Franks oysters for chucking. The clams were sweet and tender. The Salty Franks for wonderful raw, with just a bit of cocktail sauce to complement them. The SFs were, for me, the perfect size for eating raw. The second day I decided to be more adventuresome. I ordered a dozen of the High Beach Sweets and a dozen Olympia oysters. The HBS are smaller than Salty Franks, but a bit sweeter. Olympia oysters are somewhat of a novelty. They are tiny, really tiny, quarter sized. At $20 for a dozen, I wondered whether they would be worth the cost. However, these are the true Northwest Native oyster—one that almost went extinct. I figured that by buying them I would be helping to bring them back. Westcott says the test is “bright, metallic, and earthy.” I agree. These tiny oysters are very flavorful and quite different form the SF and the HBS. Delicious! Definitely worth trying, but get other shellfish as you will still be hungry even after eating a dozen Olympia oysters.

Three adults and child went. We had a delicious garden salad, beers and strawberry lemonade, clams in a tomato soup, oysters to shuck (or not) if you decide, not bread to dip in the soup or olive oil. Picnic tables were spaced apart and people wore masks until food arrived. When we were leaving we put our mask back on.

It’s an amazing destination for visitors new to the islands, we’ve been many times. Eating oysters fresh out of the ocean on picnic tables is so exotic! We arrived by boat and they got us docked right away. I’m not crazy about raw oysters in this heat (the water is too warm), so we tried the grilled sampler this time - Sriracha and the herb ones were my favorite. Be sure to get the bread too! Bathrooms clean, service endlessly chipper and fun.

This place is a true gem on San Juan Island!! You get to pick out and shuck your own oysters- delicious. We also had the best steamed clams we’ve ever had- hands down. Beautiful outside area, grab some food and a glass of wine for a fabulous day! Can’t wait to go back!
