Week on San Juan Island with two teen boys (5 Replies)
I'm taking my son and his best friend on a kayking trip out of San Juan Island this August - one final adventure before they go off to college. This was a quick-plan trip and admit to not having done a lot of research... would really appreciate a sanity check! TIA Day 1 - We're flying Detroit to Seattle on a morning flight, arriving 10:30 am. Rent a car, drive to Anacortes, take the 4:45 ferry to Friday Harbor. I have ferry reservations. Booked Earthbox Inn for the night. Day 2-5 - 4 day/3...More

That sounds great! Ferry disruptions aren't common. Not that a boat can't need emergency repair and go out of service but odds are that it won't happen to you. And they don't run late much either, or if so just 20 or 30 minutes. And it looks like you have plenty of cushion--a whole day outbound. So no worries there. I've never had a/c in the islands. Well I don't have it here in Seattle either! I suppose if the building faces west into the afternoon sun, you have a heat wave, and it's...More
First time visit with family! How does my itinerary look? (1 Reply)
Hi All! My family of five (2 parents + 3 college-age boys) is planning a late August vacation to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver. I've put together an itinerary from looking at suggestions on Trip Advisor. We will rent a car for the trip. I have already made reservation for the Anacortes to Friday Harbor ferry and the Friday Harbor to Sidney ferry. I still need to make reservations for the Swartz to Tsawwassen ferry. I am not planning on spending any time on Vancouver...More

Commenting on the US part: I think that sounds good. The only thing about going out of the way to drive up Whidbey--the drive itself isn't that special or scenic, so I'd only do it if you had time to, say, stop in Langley for lunch, or detour to something that sounds interesting or pretty.

Sea kayaking advanced purchase (2 Replies)
Hello- I am in the process of starting to plan for a late July trip to the San Juan Islands. I hope to include a 3 day kayak tour (perhaps we will spot a pod of whales as a bonus) and was wondering about how far in advance to reserve the spots. There are two of us. Does anyone know if it is custom for these small outfitters to sell out their trips? I am leaning toward Outdoor Odysseys out of San Juan Island because I have used them once before many years ago but am open to other...More
