We rented a private place at the South end near Cattle Point. We were staying just across the road from the Lighthouse. Our first morning there we took a hike over and saw many black tail deer as we were crossing the grassy bluffs. Sunrise was breathtaking in its glory of pinks and oranges. When we arrived at the Ole... More

We practically were blown right off land just off the parking lot and out by the lighthouse. But, resiliently pushing on we were rewarded with an up close glimpse of several bald eagles! The poor old lighthouse is in major disrepair but sounds like a 2 million budget has been set for the rehab of the foundation and renovation.

The building itself needs some tlc. Some trash inside, and the signage is faded, or peeling. The views are great though. We took a trail down the bluff, and walked along the beach a ways. We were a 5 minute walk from here, so it was fun to just wander over, look around.

Visitor center offers a very good short film on the history of the settlement of San Juan Island by the English and the Americans. Occupied by both, the dispute was not settled for 12 years.

Really pretty scenic area as long as the marine layer stays off shore. When first visiting the fog was so thick you couldn't see the water. Later in the day the fog lifted and the views towards the Olympic mountains were really good. Check the local conditions and visit accordingly.

Short 15 minute drive out to Cattle Point from Friday Harbor. Parking roadside prior to parking lot. Nice half mile trail to the outlook and lighthouse at Cattle Point. Saw a adorable Red Fox chasing/eating grass hoppers. Also saw a mother deer with 2 fawns. With drive about an hour and a half.

You have a great choice of different beaches to choose from all located on the southern point of the Island. I watched a Loon at small, easy to reach, pebbly Fourth of July Beach. I wanted to see foxes and by going to South Beach around sunset, I got to see not one, but three, from several different locations. Also... More
