About
The San Juan Islands are considered one the best places in the world to observe Orca (Killer) Whales and other wildlife. We specialize in providing high quality whale watching, kayaking, and adventure tours for groups, families, and independent travelers. San Juan Outfitters believes that getting people out in the natural environment is the first step in developing an appreciation for the natural world. We believe people have an innate drive to be outdoors, and we enjoy the opportunity make it happen. We hope that what comes out of that appreciation are steps taken to curb individual impact and decrease one's footprint on the environment. Decreasing our individual foot-print, and preserving our natural world is our long term goal. We're starting by setting an example here on San Juan Island. Learn more about our goals to decrease our footprint by checking out our carbon neutral goals, and our view on responsible capitalism.

We did both the sunset kayaking with Kenzie and classic whale watching tour with Lauren and both were amazing - the tours and guides!! Kayaking was fun and relaxing and Lauren and our captain on whale watching were amazing in getting us to whales (we saw six!) in a fun and educational way. You can tell they really care about the whales and being respectful with how close we get to them. I would recommend San Juan Outfitters to anyone looking for an excursion.
Specific to the whale watching we were debating between the adventure vs. classic tour. All the boats end up at the same spot when a whale is spotted so I don’t think you can go wrong with either. :)

We couldn't have asked for a more excellent experience. Wyatt was our guide for a 3-hour kayak tour in early September - he was knowledgable, entertaining and professional. We enjoyed our time with him and learned about the history of the islands and its wildlife. During our trip, we were fortunate to see several animals, including porpoises, which we know is a very rare experience for kayakers. Highly recommend this experience for anyone wanting to see and experience the most incredibly views and the best of what Washington has to offer. Ask for Wyatt! We'll for sure go back next time we're visiting the islands.

We went on a 3 day kayak trip to Stuart Island. From the beginning, it was easy to plan, coordinate and communicate with the tour company. Our guide, Wyatt, was thorough, kind, creative, fun and truly treasured the islands. He took our needs and desires into consideration as we were kayaking. The kayaking trip was gorgeous; we saw seals, eagles, porpoises, deer, and beautiful sunsets etc. We were lucky to experience bioluminescence as well! I would highly recommend this trip and company for any outdoor enthusiast.

I booked the 5 hour tour but we were only on the water including lunch for 3 hours. The guide said she cut it short due to weather but it was just windy. I paid for the 5 hour so I expected to be on the water for 5 hours. We checked in around 11:30 left the dock in our kayak at 12 and came back at 3pm. The route was changed due to wind so we didn’t see much other than a few seals. Our guide was great and super knowledgeable but overall just wish it was longer like it’s advertised.

We did the bioluminescent tour which was so awesome. Honestly - even if we had only seen the beautiful sunset from the water it would have been worth it but the light up algae made this tour one of my favorite things I ever done. I felt like Moana with the ocean lighting up as I touched it! The next evening we went night wading at a dark beach just to experience it some more. Kids were 16,14,10

We took their adventure 3 hour tour for whale watching. Ryan and Haleigh did a great job of preparing us for the boat ride and educating us along the way. It helped that we spent an hour watching transient whales swim in the Lopez Sound, but they also educated the group on other wildlife and the strains on the resident whales and other wild life due to climate change, over fishing and the use of damns.

Our trip was absolutely fantastic. It was a beautiful day and our guide was extremely kind and thoughtful in making sure we were being educated while simply enjoying the day. We saw harbor seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and other sea birds. A great way to spend an afternoon.

Our kayak trip with guides Austin and Noah was a great experience. Their attention to safety and detail for operation of equipment really made our trip feel like we could enjoy the beauty of Griffin Bay. Our guides are knowledgeable about history of the area and wildlife we enjoyed viewing. We are excited to return to Friday Harbor and enjoy another tour with Austin and Noah! …Rob and Sandi

this company is excellent. The guides were fun, knowledgeable, adapted really well to our group and were good with people of all ages. Food was fantastic and the gear was top notch. We cycled for a day on San Juan Island then did a 3 day / 2 night kayak camping trip and had a blast. Couldn't have been better. Ryder and Claiborne were out guides and both were fantastic.

We did a 2 day/1 night kayaking trip out of Roche Harbor to Stuart Island. Our guide was Brendan and he was excellent. Super flexible and knowledgeable. He was well prepared for the trip and prepared excellent food for us. If I closed my eyes I would have though we were eating food from a nice restaurant! He was well focused on saftey and we felt in control at all times. We even got to see some Orcas play for a while. My understanding is that was pretty rare but Brendan did a good job of listening to radio chatter and figured out we were close enough to paddle over or else we would have missed it. What a treat! Brendan led a nice hike for a sunset view of the lighthouse. Full Service!!

The bioluminescence tour looks amazing! But I've only kayaked once and I cannot swim. How deep is the water? How much experience is needed?

Has anyone who has done the 5 hour tour give me some feedback?
My boyfriend and I aren’t in 100 percent fit shape but aren’t out of shape either. I would LOVE to book the 5 hour but am worried if it’s going to be a lot. I expect to be sore the next day, I just don’t want to be struggling the whole time.
I would imagine we would be tandem in the kayak so maybe it would be easier. Any feedback from someone who as done it, or from San Jun Outfitters would be nice.
Thank you!

Hello!
We would love to help you get on the water! All of our guests paddle tandem or triple kayaks, so you would be in a boat with your boyfriend. The 5 hour tour rounds out to about 4 hours of paddle time in two, two our chunks. The first half hour is gear up and how to and there is a 30 minute break for lunch about half way through.
If you think you are in decent shape, you will be just fine!
I hope this helps and look forward to helping you paddle the San Juans!
