Every time we come to San Antonio ( 6 times in past two years) we find new and interesting restaurants, museums, art galleries and hip condos moving into Southtown. Tourists are even finding it. Some of the best restaurants and bars are now located here....More

I was pretty surprised at the degree of gentrification and restoration going on in Southtown—it’s like the whole area is getting a long overdue. I can remember a time when it wasn’t the safest part of town, and when we drove through last week looking...More

Just a short drive, or medium walk weather permitting, from the touristy downtown Riverwalk Loop of crowded eateries, is Southtown which is next to the king William district and next to the lower Riverwalk. It's full of nice restaurants and cooling down spots if you're...More

Everyone talks about Riverwalk which is nice but is overrun by tourist trap bars and restaurants. Just a few yards away with parts of Riverwalk as a border is Southtown. The funky King William houses are close , lots of great restaurants like the original...More

Keep S.A weird. Southtown is very unique and offers all sorts of dining experiences. Including an outdoor hang out called "The Friendly Spot" that plays movies on a blow up screen. You'll enjoy the 1st Friday of every month when the block is filled with...More

Riverwalk at night is beautiful especially on the canal. Took guided tour on a canal boat ride. Enjoyed the history and all of the my fellow canal boaters. So nice a daytime return trip was done to see Riverwalks' beauty in the daylight. River City...More

Some of its thunder may have been stolen by the restaurants and shops at the Pearl just north of downtown, but Southtown still has plenty of attractions -- good restaurants, art galleries and stores, and the shady, beautiful King William neighborhood just next door. You...More

Nice to visit and have an authentic breakfast or lunch at Taco Haven or Rosarios. Alamo Street had some cute shops and First friday is always a delight at night to walk or stroll thru.

Fun place for eats, bike riding or shopping. South town is best known for its hipster vibe as well. Nice little bars and eateries too.

If you're looking for a truer taste of San Antonio than what is offered at the Riverwalk then head over to Southtown. It's not far (a little more than walking but close) from the downtown hotels and offers true SA flavors. Try Rosario's for local...More

Relocating from NYC to SA... (1 Replies)
Hello everyone, My wife(mid-twenties), 3 year old boy and I (early thirties) will be relocating from New York to beautiful San Antonio. I lived in SA in 1996 for 4 years then moved back to NY. I want to buy a home and the NY real estate market is absolutely ridiculous. I remember the northside of town being the best place to live, is that still the case? Are there new areas I should also look into? School district is important. I work in the healthcare industry and my wife works for Chase,...More

Search previous threads for lots of detailed information. Southtown is an up-and-coming neighborhood with a Hispanic vibe. You'll be hard pressed to find a house in that price range in that area. The school district is not one I'd recommend. School districts: Alamo Heights - My first recommendation, my youngest is now a junior at the HS. Near northeast side of town. Northside - Large and fast growing with typical growing pains - over crowding, school boundary changes. Still an overall...More

Southtown Lodging (3 Replies)
From reading the forum, it looks like there is more to do and better bars and restaurants in Southtown than the Riverwalk. Does anyone have suggestions on where to stay in Southtown (hotel, BnB, or AirBNB)? We will be in San Antonio May 10 – 12 for my wife’s birthday. Thanks!

Southtown is walkable or a very short Uber ride from downtown and the Riverwalk. I am not aware of any hotels that are in the heart of Southtown but riverwalk hotels south of downtown would be closest. Look for the Marriott Plaza, Hyatt Place, Springhill Suites on or near South St. Mary's Street. I personally like the Hyatt Place as it has a rear exit onto the riverwalk Mission route. You might look for short term rentals in the King William district which is adjacent to Southtown.
