The Essex street pedestrian mall is the main street with many shops and attractions in the witch city of Salem Massachusetts. You can easily spend a few hours on this pedestrian mall alone.

If you are a fan of old buildings and little shops this a good place for you. No cars to disturb your walk and a fairly pleasant place to wonder around (except the fall). September and October are quite hectic in Salem. It is a very popular tourist destination around that time of the year. In the beginning of October is the Salem parade and the beginning of the Halloween Happenings, so plan accordingly. The pedestrian mall is not far form the train station.

We stretched our legs along this bit of Essex Street after a nice Italian meal at a nearby restaurant. The architecture and shops are varied and fun to poke around. There's a bit of everything from a candy store to a witch shop. For those interested in architecture stop and look up at the building details and fenestration.

It was a nice little mall to go shopping in. Some of the stuff was highly overpriced which I was not a fan of. The trolly gift shop was great for souvenirs and tshirts. There were also outside vendors when I was there and those were cool to shop in. There were also some people dressed up in costumes that you could get pictures with. The one I liked the best was the guy dressed up like Captain Jack Sparrow. I suggest you check this out even if yo only pass through it when you visit Salem.

We did some shopping here while we were waiting for the trolley. Walk around, you will see some shops. Its a good way to kill some time.

Great shopping for souvenirs, gifts or everyday items. There is plenty to choose from so everyone should be able to find something they like. Plus where else can you go to a haunted house in April?

This review is strictly for the indoor portion. Which is utterly horrid. Nothing was open and it was tiny offering approximately 35 seconds to walk through the whole thing. There is a comic store. But that was its only redeeming quality.

A ton of little shops to explore! A great walk, lots of people, go in the stores or just browse the tent-covered tables in front of them. Plenty of people in convincing costumes for photo opps. Watch out for the poorly made-up zombie girl...she hobbled around and would scream in people's faces. Wasn't happy about that one...but she was easy enough to avoid.

The Essex Street Pedestrian Mall is a lot of fun, especially on the weekend. There are stall out on the street in addition to the stores. There is a bit of a carnival like spirit, lots of kitschy nicknacks to buy, to ignore to do whatever you wish. Some of the stuff is trashy, but that is to be expected. Some of it is really cool, more than I expected. The prices seem relatively reasonable versus many other tourist traps. I got my daughter a Salem witch t-shirt for $6.00 and pirate gold (not real) doubloons for a $1 per doubloon. I was quite happy with that! The people are also very friendly, I really enjoyed the openness and welcoming nature of Salem residents. I would definitely make this part of your Salem itinerary, if you really want to enjoy the experience completely!
