If you are an art aficionado or a culture vulture and you neglect to visit Etherton Gallery while you are in Tucson, then you really shouldn't say you went to Tucson at all! It is a showcase for the city. Recently relocated to a new gallery near the Agustin Mercado, it is truly a gem in the desert. The inventory is large and compelling, representing some of the great luminaries of contemporary photography in particular, but also including other media. There is always an exciting exhibit on display like a recent stunner of a Joel Peter Witkin retrospective. And I cannot give enough compliments to Terry Etherton, the proprietor, and his savvy and cordial staff. It is a unique experience to walk in the door - you are always greeted with fine art in a friendly and accessible environment, and I never leave without a robust conversation about matters art with Terry or a staff. These folks have been knowing what to do in a gallery for 40 years.

I recently got a chance to visit the Etherton Gallery in an effort to see Paul Hart’s exhibit, The Fens.

I was quite impressed, not only with Mr. Hart’s work, but with the gallery itself, and the helpful gallery manager who guided me directly to the photos I had come to see.

The establishment is as beautiful as the art work itself, and I certainly hope to return again someday soon.

If you love photography, the Etherton Gallery is a gem not to be missed when visiting Tucson. We have visited multiple times over the years, and have hit on some fantastic exhibitions. The staff, and Terry in particular, could not be more helpful and pleasant. We look forward to returning again soon.

When I was growing up in Tucson in the 1980s downtown was a place you did not want to be. The core was dilapidated and vacant. Maybe you were ditching class and eating potato skins with all the city workers at the Mexican/Irish restaurant Carlos Murphys but that was about it...Even a great gallery like Etherton's was not enough of an anchor to make it a place you would deliberately drive to...nowadays with the downtown revival, the streetcar, the shops and museums, all that has changed. This gallery would appear to some to be a hipster follower of a trend but nothing could be further from the truth considering Etherton's was at the forefront of the revival downtown, knowingly or not. When you can walk into a back room and see examples of work from Magnum photographers like Alex Webb along with with photographic icons like Edward Weston, and New York great Danny Lyon among a multitude of others you know you are in some place special....What's also nice is the way you are greeted with a welcoming gaze that doesn't discriminate between the high rollers and the not so high rollers. In a photo gallery of all places, it helps to be seen.

Tucked away next to Downtown Kitchen, right by the Post Office, is this old, two story building that houses an eclectic collection of revolving artists and exhibits. The building itself is a work of art, and the rooms hold photos by a vast array of photographers from 19th century to modern day, encompassing every subject you can imagine. If you have ever taken a picture, of anything or anyone, you will find something here to give you pause, make you think, inspire you to dream. Mixed media exhibits by local artists, paintings, and sculptures that represent the region, every room is a feast. Excellent afternoon, and, get this, Free admission!!

Etherton Gallery is a local gem and a Tucson institution for over 25 years. Terry Etherton has a vast knowledge of photography. The exhibitions are varied and extensive. The gallery staff always make you feel welcome. Whether you are a collector or a first time visitor, they are happy to explain in depth about each artist or photographer. The space is wonderful, located in historic downtown Tucson.

I'm an artist and I live in NYC and was in the South West visiting family so we took a day trip to Tucson. First of all I was surprised to find what a great city it is. It's beautiful and full of life with cool bars and restaurants, really charming places an unspoiled by modern box stores and their ilk. We stopped for a glass of wine and I asked the bar person where we could find some cool art galleries and she directed me to The Etherton Gallery and I was AMAZED! Not only does the gallery rival anything in Chelsea size wise it's far more beautiful. But the thing about this gallery is the staff are amazing. No snobs, just a fun, KNOWLEDGABLE staff headed up by the Owner Terry Etherton. This man knows more about photography and art in general than 90% of the people I've dealt with in NY. I was shocked to find a gallery of this caliber. If you're ever in that area please visit, it's a remarkable place with some astonishing work by A-LIst Photographers and several yet undiscovered talents. And that exactly what I loved about it, it's all about the art and the artists. I'll be looking for The Etherton Gallery next year at Aipad Show at the Armory here in NY. I'm sure the work they bring will be impressive, but more importantly I'd like to see Terry and his delightfully, charming wife Mel again.

I love this gallery -- from its superb black-and-white photographs to its excellent temporary exhibitions. The staff are welcoming and helpful and contribute nicely to making my visits pleasurable. Though this is an upscale gallery, I have always seen something under $100 (pottery), when I've looked at the items for sale. The gallery specializes in vintage (19th and 20th century) and contemporary fine-art photography and it is a joy to look at the photos displayed in the rear rooms. As an avid Henri Cartier-Bresson fan, I was delighted on a recent visit to see one of his photographs on a wall.

The current exhibition -- "Nancy Tokar Miller: A Celebration" -- runs through June 6, 2015 in the large front room. Many of her dazzling near-abstract paintings have already been sold. Miller, sometimes referred to as Tucson's best artist, died last year. Some of the paintings are also hanging on the walls of Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails, the restaurant below the gallery in the same building.

Located in thriving Downtown Tucson, the gallery makes a nice stop when visiting the city. It takes up the second floor of historic redbrick Odd Fellows Hall. There is free parking next to the building.
