Sit on the covered porch of this charming older house-turned-desert- tea room with beautiful views of the desert--right in the city. The salads and authentic southwestern dishes are very good. Take a stroll in the gardens after lunch.

A perfect place to become acquainted with desert plants. Well maintained with lots of paths. You can choose a long walk or a brief stroll and anything in between. Great in winter if you come from the north! Things were budding up in January but...More

Get acquainted with the desert flora and fauna. Have a meal on the patio. Learn about plants and seasons in the desert. Can't go wrong with a visit to this beauty.

Tohono Chul is dedicated to educating citizens and park members about all things desert plant...and some animal, including birds and butterflies. They also have a lovely little restaurant and gift shop. As you might guess, the shop features locally made pottery and jewelry. I love...More

Walking was nice. Views lovely and overall atmosphere positive. Really enjoyed our cozy and yummy lunch at bistro. Too bad the weather was uncooperative . Just too cold so we walked faster and most likely did not get the full effect of this place...we lost.

Tohono Chul is a small gem. It offers a spectrum of desert flora. To make a stroll easy for all, there are benches placed throughout the trails, Its cafe has an extensive menu and delivers fine food.

Beautiful little gardens with many birds, even on a cooler late fall day. Anna's hummer, cactus wren, thrasher, phainopepla, pyrrhuloxia, verdin, lesser goldfinch. A few blooms at this time of year but lovely anyway. Interesting greenhouse with local plants. Two lovely gift shops and a...More

Thank you for contacting us. If you were to take one of our tours it can take up to 45 minutes, but if you decide to go it alone it can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Does that help?

Tohono Chul (19 Replies)
Is Tohono Chul similar to the Desert Muesum? If it is I don’t want to go....we LOVED the desert museum and spent 7 hours there but don’t want to go somewhere that is similar. I’m debating on Reid Zoo or maybe caverns? We have a day with nothing planned and trying to figure out what to do. We still haven’t drove Mt. Lemmon, I think we may save that for Monday..I’m thinkinking less people than on a weekend?? TIA for any tips

I was just checking out the caverns. I don’t think that would be something we would enjoy. We’ve been to Mammoth Cave and the caverns look the same lol. I was looking at the Chiricahua Mountains but it’s further than we would like to drive.

I haven't been to Tucson for 10 years and will be there briefly in a few days. Is the Tea Room still wonderful?

It's a bit pricey and, per the reviews on TripAdvisor, it seems that some people have issues with the service, but you really can't beat it for atmosphere.

Tucson Botanical Gardens vs. Tohono Chul (3 Replies)
I'm wondering which is better to visit if we only visit one. So far from what I've read, it seems like TBG has less of a focus on desert plants, and is more of a botanical garden in general. Is this the case?

Response fromcolinaz|
I don't think so. I'd choose the botanical gardens over Tohono Chul. If you're interested in desert plants, then you should visit both, as well as the Desert Museum, which itself has an excellent desert plants exhibit.
