GREAT Used Book Store - Plan to Spend Some Time Here
Dec 2017 • Friends
If you love used bookstores, as we do, you will say, "Wow," when you walk in to this place, as we did. Actually, my wife was kind of used-bookstored-out by the time we got here, as we had also been to Stages of Freedom and Symposium Books, two other nearby sources, earlier in the afternoon, but this one revived my interest, at least, re-stimulating my searching instincts and curiosity. Staff is helpful and very knowledgeable, and the store is very well organized with an amazing inventory. We did not spend very much time (see above,) but there is a tremendous range here, from contemporary graphic novels and horror (a local specialty in Providence due to a history including Edgar Allen Poe and H. P. Lovecraft,) to politics, history, religion, science, and a particularly strong selection of vintage pulp. We did not make it through the entire inventory (Ha! Goal of a life time!) but I would venture to say, whatever your interests may be, you will find someting here that will prove irresistable. Do yourself a favor and plan to spend some time.

A classic used bookstore in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island
Aug 2016 • Solo
Anytime I visit a city I always try to find the local used bookstores since I think it is very important to do business with independent book stores. Cellar Stories was the perfect bookstore. I found some books in that wonderful old used bookstore (it is upstairs and construction is going on down stairs so it was a bit hard to find at first).

The staff was nice and the book selection was really good. I found three books to purchase and had a great time just perusing used books. There is just something about a old used bookstore that draws me in and keeps me coming back for more.

Cosy and Good Place

It is wonderful place for the used book lover. There are so many books in here, you can find every kind of books. And the price is also reasonable. If I have enough time to stay, I can stay here all day.

Used Book Lover's Paradise in Providence, R.I.
Jun 2015 • Couples
While taking a taxi from the airport to my hotel during my first-time visit to Providence in June, 2015, the driver kindly suggested some local attractions. He told me about this bookstore, though he couldn't remember the name of it. By a happy coincidence, it was just a few steps away from my hotel (Hotel Providence---great place, BTW). It's also in walking distance from the Visitor's Information Center. Located at 111 Mathewson St. in downtown Providence, Cellar Stories Bookstore is a used book lover's paradise. If you love used bookstores (like me), you may notice some clutter, and you may think that you should have brought a feather duster, but you'll quickly be mesmerized by the vast selection of paperback and hardback books on the seemingly endless rows of bookshelves. There's fiction, non-fiction, biographies, horror, sci-fi, African-American fiction, GLBT fiction, mysteries and thrillers, music, comic books, and much much more. I didn't get to see everything, because once I found my favorite 2 sections, I was stuck. Before I knew it, it was closing time, and I had to narrow down the selection of books that had mysteriously piled up next to me. The prices were great (e.g. paperbacks for $2.95). Needless to say, I had to go back on my last day in Providence to hunt for more treasures. So, if you love books, and you enjoy looking through a HUGE selection of cheaply-priced used, not-so-used, and rare books, check out Cellar Books when you're in Providence. (The name is a bit of a misnomer, because the store is on the second floor, not in a basement.) Their website is www.cellarstories.com. (Not sure if the prices are as great when you order on the website, though.) Hours are 10 to 6, Monday through Saturday.

Unusual Resource in Providence
Aug 2014 • Business
This is the most extensively supplied Used Books store I've run across. Up a flight of stairs and covering half a city block, it rivals The Strand in Manhattan for scope and breadth of subject matter -including LP's and Sheet Music. Yes, it has that delicious aroma of faded vellum and the happy creak of wooden floorboards, all presided over by the bearded Mike Chambers, the Santa Claus of bibliophiles. As a Showbiz buff, I discovered a memoir by the guy who wrote scripts for the Marx Bros. and the book for Of Thee I Sing -first musical to win the Pulitzer. His name is Morrie Ryskind, and I didn't even know his book existed till I ran across it here. Had to come back a second day of my brief stop-over in Providence -and it's what I'll remember about the town.
111 Mathewson St. down the street from the Hotel Providence. Mike also mails his stock out.
