About
The Estes Park Memorial Observatory (EPMO) is a community resource dedicated to fostering scientific education of children in Estes Park and serving as an educational venue for the community and visitors. EPMO holds events throughout the year in conjunction with the local school system, the Estes Valley Astronomical Society and the Rocky Mountain National Park. The observatory schedules private and group viewing sessions and hosts educational lectures on astronomy, cosmology, astrophotography and special astronomical events such as comet fly-bys and more! We also have fun on going projects like our Human Sundial Project. EPMO is currently offering opportunities for volunteers. Just contact us to get involved and learn about our sky along the way! We've wanted to go for years but we've been here on the wrong days and then COVID. The facility is beautiful and more than we expected. Mike welcomed us into the observatory with the group of other families.

The night started off with some videos on space and astronomy. They are an educational way to kill time while you wait for it to get really dark. After the videos, he gave us a presentation using the star wall they have in the observatory. I enjoy astronomy and learned a lot. We brought our kids and they learned a lot too.

Then it was up to the observatory to get to use the 16" telescope. You can get 14 people up there but it is tight. Be sure to dress like you will be outside for an hour. There are blankets up there if you need them. Mike did a great job explaining and truly has a passion for the stars. He was able to speak on a level that could be understood by kids and astronomy fans alike. The views were phenomenal. We saw several planets, a globular cluster of stars, a nebula, and all sorts of awesome things. The skies were so clear we could see satellites speed by. Just an awesome experience.

The observatory is a memorial to Mike's adult children who died in an accident. He took their insurance and built this observatory. It is obvious that it is a work of love.

Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. They use the donations for scholarships for Estes Park Students to go to college. Definitely book in advance and have a great time.

We feel lucky to have spent an amazing evening with a sweet man named Mike, at his community observatory in Estes. We saw Jupiter with its stripes and moons, Saturn and its rings, a dying star, binary star system, star clusters and the neighboring galaxy Andromeda! This little Estes secret is really something special. His nerdy love of space is contagious. The dome held 12 of us and we had many turns at the telescope. This is something a solo person would enjoy up to a family (our 6 year old daughter loved it)!

We had a wonderful experience at the Observatory. Michael was extremely knowledgeable and friendly answering all questions. He was a great host, making coffee and offering water to everyone.
Prior to going upstairs to view the sky and planets, we went outside to see the space station crossing over. Once upstairs we were all given an opportunity to look through the telescope, we even saw the rings of Saturn!
Please though, make reservations!! I think that only 12 or 14 people fit upstairs.
We also saw a heard of elk!

This is so cool especially if you are a nerd. This guy basically built this observatory on his own and now gives tours to support their scholarship non-profit. It costs a donation at your discretion. It starts off with some space videos and an overview of stars you might see. Then you go up into the dome to look through their very cool microscope. My kids ate it up. I liked it better than NASA in Houston because it was so personal and small.

This may be hard to believe, but our visit to the observatory was on par with hiking to Emerald Lake. The brief overview provided by Mike and then being able to look through the telescope were as awesome as the views we saw in the mountains. My children are older, 25 and 22, and thought this was one of the best experiences we have ever had on a family vacation. Luckily for us, the weather cleared, and Mike was able to point out several amazing star clusters and stars. Also, the view of the moon was more than I could have hoped for. The detail and clarity made it seem like I was looking at a Nasa photo. If you are lucky enough to book a session with Mike, DO IT! You will remember this for a lifetime. It doesn't hurt that he is also a former engineer who worked on several projects for NASA and Lockheed Martin. He is the real deal.

this was a highlight for us . grandchildren all live in cities so getting to look through the telescope was wonderful . cold with the roof open so bring coats. Mike Connoly was really great - he got my grandchildren to learn something on vaca . it was cloudy the night we were scheduled and we were dissappointed but he contacted us 2 days later and asked " want to look at some stars ? boy did we! and it was a perfect night of looking . over all about 2hrs and he works on a free will donation which is donated to the local school for scholarships in stem areas. all 3 generations were amazed and enjoyed it

I had to hogtie my husband into going to this-he was afraid it would be too cold and he didn’t understand Mike’s amazing wealth of knowledge. My hubby later said this was the best part of our trip! You must wear layers and dress appropriately! You will start indoors with videos and Mike will explain what you will see when you go up into the observatory. He’s a brilliant retired astrophysicist but teaches children about our galaxy. People of all ages will enjoy the night with Mike. We would love to go again! You must reserve your spot far in advance because his space in the observatory is very limited. It is free, but they use all donations to educate local school children to gain their interest in the stem sciences. It’s such a wonderful program!

Thank you for the great review. I wish I was an Astrophysicists but I’m just a lowly retired engineer with a passion for physics and the stars. Space boggles my mind and I love sharing anything I can with our visitors to make their visit fun and interesting. I especially love getting the kids excited about science and space. Please come back and visit us again sometime. Clear Skies, Mike

My wife and I were in Estes Park for our honeymoon, and I was able to sign up for the tour of the Memorial Observatory. Mike did a fantastic job communicating with us and the rest of the group regarding potential weather changes and was able to work with us to reschedule when the clouds rolled in. During the tour, Mike did an amazing job explaining the basics of astronomy and showing us what we would be looking at when we went up to the telescope. Even though it was a rather large group (12-14 people), Mike was able to effectively create and individualized experience and make sure everyone got plenty of opportunities with the telescope. My wife and I will definitely plan to make a return visit the next time we are in Estes Park.

My friends and I had a wonderful time at the observatory. We will definitely go back next year. Mike was very knowledgeable about astronomy and was extremely nice and patient with our group. I highly recommend that you visit when you are in Estes. Kid and adult friendly.

For our small company retreat, we made evening reservations for an intriguing experience that exceeded our expectations!! We all had such a great time learning, observing through the telescope, and chatting with Mike. We were so impressed by Mike's expansive knowledge and ability to share it!!
