Rented a 4 person jeep from here for a day. As we were novices, they gave instructions on how to handle the jeep and the trails. They asked us questions to help determine which trail to take. Jeep was in good condition. As it was chilly on the day we went, roof was on and vehicle was closed to outside air. We could open windows of course. We chose Estes Park trails. Plenty of bumps for our group. There are 3 trails on this tour and we only did 2 as they increase in difficulty and we decided we did not need more difficulty. Staff did a great job explaining what we would see and giving us advice on how to see the best views. We took a picnic and ate on of the trails. There is room for a cooler in the back. We bought the insurance for around $50 as we were not sure what to expect. You do have to sign a sheet agreeing to costs for specific damages--tire $350 I think, scratches, other damages were specified that I don't remember. I do know the $50 covers expenses above $2500. Up until that amount, you are on your own or use your own auto insurance. They will ask to see your auto insurance when you rent the vehicle. You receive a device that shows you the detail of the trails. It is not a GPS. It does have coordinates listed at the top so if you need help you can give the responder those. This device was helpful in helping us keep on the trails. Fun day. For us older people it was bumpy but our son and his wife (age 35) thought the more bumps the better. Even they did not want trail number 3 though.

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed review! We appreciate your comments and are glad to hear you had an enjoyable day. Some of the trails do get pretty rocky but there is an adventure for everyone. Hope to see you back sometime!

Looking for some great family fun- especially with teenagers...this is it! Easy check-in procedures, and took great care of sanitizing the equipment. Every crew member we encountered was friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. There are easy to intermediate trails; so it met everyone’s needs. Highly recommend making reservations to ensure you get an opportunity to enjoy this Estes Park adventure.

Great advice. Reservations in advance are very important during peak season. Thanks for noticing our efforts to keep things sanitized. Everyone works so hard at it. If people could only see behind the curtains.

My husband rented a Polaris Razr as a surprise for me while we were on vacation from Miami, Florida. To say this was one of the coolest experiences I've had is an understatement. We couldn't have asked for a perfect day, weather-wise, and because it was on a Friday, there were only three other couples on the course. The staff was excellent, informative, and kind. The equipment was top notch and very well maintained. Not all the trails were open due to the snow, but we had a blast anyway. For those of you looking for an adventure that's off the beaten path - this is a MUST DO! We had such a great time that I'm sure anyone in earshot could hear us laughing and screaming so loudly from how much fun we had. Also a side note... Ladies, this is the time you show your man you can drive like a race car driver!!! LOL

Second time in two years I've rented ATV's from Backbone. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and focused on safety. The equipment was in great shape. I really appreciated backbone staff asking me if I was a repeat customer after I had already made and paid for our reservation. They gave me a repeat customer discount without hesitation. Recommend they remind people not to stop and "hang-out" on the narrow section of forest road 105 near highway 72. The congestions by other riders made passing them down and up the hill difficult. All around a great adventure.

This was our second time renting a jeep from Backbone Adventures and we were not disappointed. We had been once last year and we had so much fun that my son requested to come back this year for his 4th birthday. From the moment we showed up until the time we returned our jeep the staff went above and beyond to be helpful and make sure we had a great experience. During checkin we casually mentioned this was our second time renting and immediately the gentleman helping us informed us we should have received a 10% discount on our rental when booking. When he went to process the discount another team member informed she had already processed a refund prior to our arrival that morning (unbeknownst to us), we were impressed. The equipment was in great shape and exactly as we expected. No issues at all out on the trails and we even saw a moose! Upon returning the jeep and informing the team member it was my sons birthday and he had the best day she provided my husband with a toy jeep at no charge for the birthday boy! We will definitely be back to Backbone Adventure & highly recommend this company. Great people, great time!

I have done other ATV rentals in over the years and I have to say that Backbone was by far the most fun I've had so far. To start, the online booking was super easy, that's always a good sign. When we showed up at the shop, in Estes Park, we were met by a very friendly lady at the counter. She had our packet made up and ready for us and carefully explained everything, leaving no questions. On top of that, she was super fun, yet professional.
We drove to the trailhead where we met the team that gave us our safety training and instructions. They also provided good info on the trails, where to go, what to see, how much time was needed and, of course, safety first. On top of the important safety briefings, the guys were funny, honest, very informative and again, professional.
So, we were already off to great start and the we got to the machines. My 21 year old son and I (54) rented ATVs, 4 Wheelers, Quads, whatever you call them but we wanted individual machines and the ability to have some serious fun. The quads started right up, and we hit the trail. Throughout the day of hard riding, there was not one single issue at all with our quads, they performed perfectly. This is surprising because at other places I rented, this is not always the case, there's always something not quite right. Not here though. Another fun thing is that the machines are not governed, like some places do. Now, the trail speed limits are discussed before the ride but with the awesome machines we had, we MAY have gone over a little bit, here and there, in open and safe areas of the trail only though. :)
I'm a somewhat experience rider and my son was a novice but the trails easily accommodated us well. I think any level of rider would appreciate the range of difficulty the trails have to offer. Families riding together in the Razors really looked like they were having a blast as well, very manageable for adults with kids. I think my next trip will be with my girlfriend and we're going to rent a 2 person Razor, they look so much more comfortable and they seem really stable as well.
I'd rate Backbone with an A+, they were very personal, professional, fun and had top notch, well maintained equipment. I actually got an email from the owner, Andy, thanking me for riding with them and supporting their business, when does that happen? We're going to book again real soon and hopefully again come the snowy season. This was one of the most fun days we had in the mountains in a long time.

My fiance' and I spent a week in Estes Park to celebrate her 65 birthday. One of the excursions I planned was to take a ride on an ATV. After researching ATV rentals I settled on Backbone Adventures mainly because they are a company that is family operated. I believe in supporting businesses like them and they didn't disappoint! This was my first time to handle the Polaris Razor 1000 XP and I was a little intimidated at first glance. However after a safety orientation and review of the operation of the ATV I did feel more at ease. Kathy was nervous as we took off but the more I drove the better I got and the more comfortable she became. By the time we got back she had settled in and said she had so much fun!! She called me "Mario Andretti"!! I would highly recommend Backbone Adventures if you happen to stop in at Estes Park, CO.
We loved being in Colorado and riding around on rocky trails on the Razor 1000 XP ATV! My advice to anyone that rents one of these is don't be timid. Take a few minutes to get comfortable then go have a blast!

This is a must-do activity in Estes Park. Check-in at the shop in town was quick, a fast 18 mile drive to the location of the ride was easy and BOTH experiences were outstanding. The courtesy of the staff was excellent and they wanted to make sure we had a fantastic experience. They answered all our questions, gave tips to get the best experience from the ride, and the equipment was the newest and best available with integrated GPS/trail maps and a blue tooth stereo. Rented the Polaris RZR 1000 XP4 for 3 hours and the kids absolutely loved it. Very safe. Can't wait to go back and do it again.
TIP: Make sure you check in at the shop at least 45 minutes in advance to allow yourself to arrive at the site of the ATV's before your reservation time...your time starts whether you are on the ATV or not. Allow for about a 30 minute drive.

If you are looking for a great experience from start to finish then don’t look anywhere else! Bonnie, Jess and Chris made our experience amazing. They took care of us and handled a small issue we had much better than I expected. They made us feel safe and provided us with everything we needed to have such a great time. The Jeeps they have not only look great but are upgraded (lifted suspension, bigger rims and tires, and a winch) to ensure you don’t spend most of your time stuck! Definitely give this company and their employees a 10/10!

My husband and I rented a 2 seat RZR, our start time was 3:30PM for 3 hours. We went to the office to sign all the paperwork and get instructions on how to get to the location of the ride which is around 20 miles from the office. Everyone at the office was very helpful and I really liked that the girl was wiping off the pens before they handed them to you (COVID). We drove out to the location and there were very nice views on our way out. We finally found the location and the guys running the show explained the trails, the machines we were renting and all safety rules. There was an easy trail so you can practice and then you can make your way to the trails you want to do. 3 hours was more than enough time for us personally. We stayed on the easy and medium trails since it was our first time. We really started to get the hang of it towards the end. It was a bumpy ride and I was thankful for the helmet. They did mention that there had been moose spotted in the meadow, we got to see a 2 including a bull moose, it was really cool. It was fun to rent a RZR and get out and do something we normally would not have done. Overall, the experience with Backbone was great, the RZR ran really well and they wanted you to have fun but be safe at the same time.

If I rent a jeep for multiple days, do I return the jeep after day one and pick up at the trailhead on day two or do I keep the jeep overnight and return at the end of my last day?
Written August 19, 2020
Hi Jacob, if you rent the jeep for multiple days you will just keep it overnight and bring it back at the end of your last day.
Written August 19, 2020
Does this require the purchase of a park pass/reservation? Or is everything included in the rental rate?
Written August 19, 2020
The only thing you would need a pass for is if you choose to go through Rocky Mountain National Park. With the new COVID restrictions it is required to book a reservation to get through, all the other trails are open and included.

If we rent a Jeep and take a trail that is not extreme would it be okay to bring a 4 month old?
Written December 17, 2019
We saw this situation during our day adventure and we would not recommend it. The trails are all pretty rough, they are not country dirt roads
But - I would contact backbone directly for their advice. I am thinking their contract has restrictions as to minimum age

how much would it be to fill up a few gas cans for dirtbikes and to rent a rzr
Written November 21, 2019
This time of year we don't offer dirt bikes. Trails have snow. But do check out the website. Details and prices are on there. Thanks for the question.

If you rented a Jeep there would be no problem as the safety seat requirement could be met.

I will be about 7 weeks pregnant at the time of our trip. Are any of your tours safe for early pregnancy?
Written June 2, 2019
I would not go on this trip while pregnant. No matter how early.
Written June 2, 2019
This time of year I would definitely wear warm clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or muddy. Also, wear comfy shoes! There are a few places where you can stop and hike a little to find hidden treasures. Just be comfortable, dress warm, and have fun!
