The Kohala Divers whale watching and sunset cruise (4pm to 6:30) was excellent and exceeded our expectations. Captain Bryce and Tyler (crew) were very courteous, engaging, and enthusiastic during the evening cruise. We loved their spacious two deck boat, the length of the cruise, and the close proximity of the whale watching to their launch site at Kohala. We have been coming to the Big Island and the Kohala Coast for 14 years, but never went on this cruise. But after our experience this February with Kohala Diver's, we highly recommend their cruise for whale watching (we saw around a dozen), the non-crowd experience, and the exceptional value of this sunset experience.

My wife and I have been diving for quite a few years and this dive crew/captain were the most professional we have seen. Great morning dive with the added bonus of seeing a few dolphin pods swim with the boat as well as multiple whales. Great trip, would definitely dive with this crew again.

This was our first time diving with Kohala divers (April 2021) and we are sold! I was unable to dive so the Captain kept a weather eye on me while I snorkeled. The dive guide accompanying my husband and daughter was careful, gentle, attentive, and patient knowing that they had not been diving in 7 years. Safety came first, both in terms of the boat, and the diving. The boat itself is the best I have ever been on as a diver - it is beautiful! We would have done more dives with them but my family did not want to leave me on the surface! Next time! This is a great outfit! Mahalo to you all at Kohala Divers!

We have been diving for over 90 years combined as husband and wife. We have over 3,000 dives between us. 2000 plus in the last 17 years. I just moved back to the Big Island from the Cayman Islands after being gone from my home for 26 years. We are retired and are making our new home the place for us to keep up our diving.

Went in today just to ask questions as we are avid shore divers. We weren’t even greeted or acknowledged. Being experienced and older … we agreed this establishment by how they operated while in there … was all about $$$$. Not even “Hi, we are really busy … can we help you?” Or “this is a bad time … can you come back in an hour?”
After hanging around 45 minutes and slipping in a few questions on cost of tank rentals … we left. As we say in Hawaii … “No Respeck!” (No respect!) This establishment deserves to get off their “High Maka Maka” attitude to be a real success.

Jus sayin.

Aloha and I'm sorry to read your comments that your experience in our store was not a good one. Sounds like you hit us in a busy moment but we'd still like our customer service to shine through even when we are in the heat of a busy boat check in or return. I'm sorry it did not in your case. It can get hectic for short periods of time and it always is a shock that it often all happens at once. Sorry this is when you happened to come check us out. We have a value system we set our culture with and a big part of it is being the shop for our local community but also making visitors feel like ohana. The best part of coming to work everyday is that we know our local dive friends and repeat visitors. Kohala Divers provides a free dive club for local ocean lovers to meetup, plan dives, do beach and underwater cleanups and get deep discounts on boat trips and classes. We also offer multi Rental tank cards and a great deal on fills for our local divers. I hope you get a chance to come down and meet the crew at another moment and get a better experience of who we are and get to connect with other local divers.

This is our second dive trip to the Big Island. We first discovered Kohala Divers at the end of our first trip and were sad that we hadn't found them before. Great staff, great boat and really awesome dive sites. We scheduled two days with them this trip and loved both days. Mike was an amazing dive guide - as we are fish and animal nerds - we loved that he took the time to point out many things including a hydroid shrimp which we would never have found on our own. As a photographer - he definitely appreciates the small things (as do we) and it is always fun to dive with a guide who really appreciates finding things of interest and sharing them with all of his divers. The Kohala coast (I think) has some of the best diving on the island. We were even treated to a special whale encounter where the whale came to our boat (literally almost touching the boat) and hung out for a while spyhopping, rolling, waving with his fin, giving everyone on the boat the thrill of our lives. Our second day we dove with Tyler (also a great guide) and we were able to see 3 daytime mantas and an octopus as well as all the expected reef animals. The boat captains were also amazing (though sadly I am not good with remembering names). No one should dive the big island without diving with Kohala Divers!!

Myself and a group of dive professionals from Kona arranged a private charter with Kohala Divers to explore some new dive sites, as the Kohala Coast is quite the trek from Kona. Kohala Divers took great care of us, from the booking process to accommodating us on their boat, to showing us some really amazing stuff underwater- this crew did a wonderful job. Their boat is comfortable and well maintained, their staff is knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Thank you so much Kel, Tyler and Captain Bryce for making it a fun day for us. Even though we were all dive professionals, Kel and Tyler made a point to give us thorough and informative dive briefings (Kel wins the award for best gestures in a dive briefing) that it was a refreshing change of pace to be on the receiving end of fantastic service. We would love to dive with them again.

I have dove with Kohala divers for over 20 years now and have really seen how much better they are each time I am on the Big Island. Their new boat is outstanding and the staff is always very friendly and helpful. I wouldn't dive with anyone else when I'm visiting the Kohala Coast!

I booked a dive for 2 people two days before we wanted to dive. This was towards the end of the day and the lady took my credit card information and email and said the information would be in the email. The next day I noticed I still hadn't received the email, so I called in the afternoon to no answer. I called again a couple hours later and left a message explaining that I didn't know what time to arrive or specifically where to show up.

The morning of the dive I called and nobody answered, I left another message. I got a call back around 7am but I missed it so I called them right back. They looked at my information and saw that they put my email address down wrong so they verbally told me where to go. I told them I was 45 minutes away and they told me that would be too late. Understandable and unfortunate because we really wanted to dive. BUT then they told me that I was unable to get a refund since their cancellation policy wouldn't allow it.

This is where it's a shady business. The mistake was theirs. A good business owner would refund the money since it was all done in good faith (I wasn't trying to screw anyone over and their mistake in my email address was an honest one). They already charged my credit card $350+ so I asked to speak to the manager to get the money refunded. She said the manager was away but would call me back in the next couple days. I heard nothing back.

I called again the next week, the manager was also gone, so I left my information again and was told I will receive a call back.

Aaaaand then I called back again the next week, same exact same thing happened. As of this writing, I still haven't gotten a call back. Maybe this review will get their attention.

Would not recommend this business.

Female employee lyes straight in the face!
Booked this trip to Hawaii for our 15th wedding anniversary. Booked two days of diving back in April. I am scuba instructor and my wife is certified rescue diver we both love diving and we are passionate about it so I never check cancellation policy since we wasn’t planning on canceling. We went on fists day of diving and in some reason my wife was having equalizing problems so right after we get off the boat I went to scuba shop and ask to cancel next day diving which I wasn’t happy about it but since is our anniversary vacation I did. Lady at the shop told me I will be charged $20 seat fee witch I agreed to it then I left. Couple of days later when I check my credit card and I was charged twice amount of $385.60 equal to two days of diving per 2 people.
When I went back to the shop soon as she saw me she went to different room and I was talking to another person who told me straight up that he is even confused about $20. Then I was told about 24h canceling policy. It’s totally fine but I wish that she told me when I was trying to cancel it then I would come diving by myself instead of losing $ for both of us. She was NOT professional at all so that’s why I don’t recommend this dive operator.

My wife and I took a morning dive/snorkel trip with Kohala Divers in late May. I did the two tank dive while my wife snorkeled twice with a small guided group. The dive boat, Namaka, was one of the best dive boats I have been on in the 6 years I have been diving in the Western Hemisphere. I believe that we had 14 divers and 4 snorkelers on the vessel, plus 4 guides, captain, and mate. The divers were split up into groups of 5 per guide. These folks really did a great job getting everyone geared up and in the water smoothly after getting us to the first dive site. They actually went to one site and looked around before passing on it to go to a site further north that they don’t often get to because they knew the conditions would be better. Visibility was great and the dive went very well. Meanwhile, my wife had a nice snorkel with her group also. After everyone was back on board, but before we departed, the crew spotted a large pod of spinner dolphins coming in towards us, so most everyone just jumped back in the water with masks and snorkels to try to get a glimpse of them.
As the dolphins departed, everyone got back on the boat, roll-call was made and we then moved onto the second dive site. The next thing we knew, the dolphins had reappeared on the bow wave of the boat. What a gift to see these amazing creatures swimming along in front of us. Once they got bored with us, they left and we got to the second dive site. Back in the water after the required hour interval and the second dive was also very nice. The dive guides did a great job keeping us moving at a comfortable, not too fast, pace so we could see lots of great fishes and even a sleeping white tip shark. Once we all were back on the boat, we headed back to the harbor and spent a little time at the dive shop that they own. Also a nice shop, with most everything you could need.
Overall, a great experience with Kohala Divers. A first class operation. Definitely will use them again when we return to Hawaii in the future.
