This was a special place to the ancient peoples who lived here. It is special to me, also. I find a sense of peace and reverence here that I lose touch with in the cities. Here, you can find yourself, if you only open up to the calmness around you.

Martha’s Butte - is definitely Off of the Beaten Path and is located up in the Northern part of the park. It’s out in the Boonies so you need to plan ahead & prepare to visit it. Not for everyone & especially not for small children! Enjoy!

When you are traversing through the Petrified Forest, make sure you stop by this Butte and take it all in. The views are stunning and there are plenty of photo opportunities at hand. Don't be in a rush, there are some great scenic views to take in.

Interesting butte arising to quite a height as you drive closer in proximity. We stopped to admire the colorful striations and size as it was so close to a parking area. Had there been more time, I would have loved to hike it!

I was determined to do the park at my age-range... Senior.... the ones with the lifetime pass etc. but everyone was telling me I had to hike. I was NOT going to hike..... but Martha's Butte is in one of the sheets you can get in Painted Desert Inn or at one of the visitor centers. It is a bit more than a mile. It has very few challenges, other than watching where you step and bringing water and be intelligent. One of the good things about the Petrified Forest is how much you can enjoy in the 45 minute fast drive through, but if you are determined, you can make it a real adventure. It does not have well worn paths. You get a topo map with a line on it. And you find your own way. The Butte is easy to spot and the map is pretty clear if you know how to read it. You mostly walk thorough a dry wash and if you look down, you see footprints of not just the hikers, but the pronghorn and lizard tails streaking by. Even the bobcats if you are looking close. I was going alone and very slow in an early morning, loaded with extra water and my cell phone because I was a RANK AMATEUR. It was easy to enjoy the changes in the scenery and revel in the solitude. At the end, I sat by the amazing spiral that has a light dagger on the solstices! Then home again. I felt so expanded when I got back into my car. You can do it!!
