Fantastic beach to get away from the crowds. Perfect for all ages. Sandy beach, shells, walking, fishing... great family area. Downside- no restrooms or portables. Be prepared to rough it. With the appropriate vehicle you can drive on the beach. Be aware not to sit or stand at the entrance where people are trying to get into and out of the area.

My Master naturalist cousin wanted to show us the place where the Rio Grande flows into the sea so we timed the tide so she could drive down the beach to get us as close as possible. Very, very cool to see this sight, indeed! You can see a truck on the other side in Mexico. And, yes, Border Patrol was in evidence, but I didn't get the impression they had to deal much with migrants. Of course we had to drive by Elon Musk's Space X facility on the way to the beach. Locals are NOT fans of this since they often close the road to the beach (be sure to check for low tide and road closures before you go)

We visited Boca Chica beach due to the reviews of it's solitude. The beach is not crowded at all! We were there from 8 -3pm and there was literally only about 10 cars total on the entire beach! So if you are looking for solitude, this is the beach for you! It is far away from South Padre crowds. It is very natural beach. There is nothing out there for almost 15 miles. The water is clean and the waves are nice. Some seaweed on the shore but not so bad in the water. Only Sad thing is that the few people who do visit this beach leave some pollution. Or maybe some things carried onto shore by the ocean...However, if you go there, you can be part of the solution and pick up the few plastic bottles you see...there are trash cans at the back of the beach....On a happier note, there are great amount of shells! It is ideal for shell hunting. It is ideal for private picnic. I would say it is probably the most isolated beach you can find with no crowds. We set up our camp up, had complete solitude, picnicked, and over all had a very lovely time.

Launch and production sites are right along the road and Michael with spi-shuttle.com arranged the trip for us. It took us all together 3 hours from the island to see the launch site and back to SPI. There are no toilets except the gas station we pulled in in Brownsville. Bets spot for making photos of the actual launch site is from the sand dunes. If you can bring your tele. lens it will help.

I was unfortunate. There was a weather event that caused the beach to be covered with Portuguese man of wars and jellyfish. It was extremely rough and tended to make me nauseous. Still enjoyed getting to view SpaceX Starship from the beach.

The last time we tried to get here, it was closed due to work being carried out at SpaceX, so it is best to check first.
The initial part of the beach was quite crowded, but we took a drive down, and there was hardly anyone there.
We went to the end so you could see South Padre Island across the water. It was fantastic seeing the dolphins swimming and jumping there.
It was very peaceful and definitely worth the extra drive.

We drove from S Padre Island to Boca Chica Beach, roughly a 40-45 minutes drive. You take Hwy 4(Boca Chica Rd) to the end literally. We passed Space X on the way as well as some historical markers. Once you turn right onto the beach, you drive maybe two miles or so to the tip of Texas where you will see the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico. Directly across the beach is Mexico which is 30-40 yards. There were quite a few cars on the other side and people fishing. Border Patrol confirmed this on our drive back to Harlingen, TX. Overall this was an amazing experience and I will definitely return to hang out for the day.!!

Mainly went here to see Elon Musk's SpaceX plant, which amazing and definitely worth the drive there. Had a quick look at the beach as well, which was nice plus fairly quiet. If we had had more time we would have stayed there for a while.
Word of caution, if you are visiting from abroad then make sure you take your passport with you as there are checkpoints where you must show identification. This applies if you are going to South Padre Island as well.

It was a surreal experience to see the Starship rocket surprisingly close to the road. No security to speak of and then less than two weeks later to he able to watch it blast off and return to land upright for the first time. Pretty cool even if it f did blow up 8 minutes later.

Not much going on. The beach remind me of an elephant graveyard mentioned in Lion King. Just desolate and under a lot of construction by government as well. Rocky beach. Pretty but Not much sand to enjoy.

Hello July 31st - Aug 4th. Good luck and catch those big ones!

Yes. But please know that there are no bathroom facilities. The closest bathroom would be in Brownsville which is about 15- 20 minutes away. But I suppose you have the ocean atleast for number 1.

Can I, in either a regular vehicle or walking, get to the point where the Rio Grande connects to the Gulf? I would like to see with my own eyes where the river dumps into the Gulf...
Written June 3, 2019
it's around 2 or so miles south from Boca Chica Rd to the Rio Grande estuary. I don't recommend driving a "regular car" on the sand. However, the sand is pretty packed and flat for around 3/4 of the way there so a "regular car" should be ok. You will have to walk about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from there to the estuary. It is definitely worth the trip! You can walk across the estuary during low tide to Mexico (it's around a 100 foot cross). Or you can swim across anytime. There are usually 10-20 Mexican nationals on the Mexican side at any time. And tons of interesting salt water/ fresh water organisms. You will enjoy it!

At first I thought it would be ok because cars and trucks are allowed, but an article in the Brownsville Herald says ATVs are prohibited.

Does Boca Chica State Park have RV overnight parking?
Written June 24, 2018
I don’t think so. Because you have to go through boarder patrol on the way out of the park I doubt anyone is allowed to stay the night
Written June 27, 2018
There is tent camping available there and on South Padre Island at the Isla Blanca Park.
