Our little getaway
Mar 2020 • Couples
We live in Ajo during the winter. One of our many activities in the last 2 years has been the golf course and the restaurant. The restaurant is run by volunteers and is a non-profit. A lot of people put in their time like one big family working together to enjoy a common interest. This is not a clique where new people are excluded on the contrary new people are welcome especially those with a light Happy Spirit who enjoy others and their activities. There is no place that I know of like the Ajo Country Club and golf course. A typical example would be like the other evening when we drove out to the golf course in our RZR and met some campers and RVers and sat and had a wonderful evening with people we hadn't met before. The golf course is very challenging even though it's very simple. You can learn to play Here Without Fear of rejection or criticism there's even a golf pro with lessons every Monday during the winter. Most everything is during the winter, things slow down in the summer big time. The restaurant has hired a cook who started yesterday, his name is David. He and his family live in Ajo and are trying to make a start toward their own restaurant. There is a board of directors with a president and they meet regularly during the weather where if you are a member you can vote. Members have pretty decent privileges for the money. My wife and I are members at $95 a month all the golf we want and driving range. Try to beat that even with us playing half a year and paying for the full year. We purchased a small cart and store it in one of the cart sheds for $24 a month including electricity to recharge the cart. Come check it out and bring some of your older inexpensive clubs and you'll see how challenging the par-4s are or the long par-5 or the short par threes over the water fountain and palm trees. The board members are Bob, Bud, Harley, Greg and Dave all good guys. The course is used by mostly amateur adults but in the evening during school the high school coach brings the kids out in a bus and they play.

We just happened upon this Jewel in the desert 🌵....we came to hang out & boondock for a few days. We’ve left and come back & we love it here! Great Golf course where we’re learning to golf, wonderful little restaurant that we help out in occasionally, & terrific people who almost all volunteer to keep this place going. I would highly recommend going out to experience it all.... GOLF, RESTAURANT & BAR, & GOOD PEOPLE. AGC!!!😎

Very unique

The golf course did not look that fancy and great, but it is pretty cheap to play. The place is run by volunteers so they do not have much of a budget to work with. They have an honor system for playing to play. The restaurant-Country Club is small and rather dumpy, but the friendliness of the volunteers and other clients there make it worth spending some time and grabbing something to eat there. We enjoyed lunch there and the food was not bad...the prices are very cheap/reasonable.

Golfing with family
Jan 2017 • Couples
I ate at the restaurant and played golf. The golf course is a little rocky but there are no steep hills or anything you have to worry about. We were there with family so golfed in the couples day that they had. We ate breakfast there one day and a late lunch there one day. The food is very good and filling, most is made from scratch from the volunteers that run the place.

Can't Say Much about the Golf, but the Food is Good!
Mar 2015 • Couples
We're not golfers, so we don't have much to say about the course, except that it is a pleasant interruption to the desert that surrounds it. What we can write about, though, is the clubhouse and its small but very worthwhile restaurant.

Located northeast of the town of Ajo off a (very bumpy) paved road, the clubhouse features a small, but inviting restaurant. The food is very good, and the helpings are generous. Dressings for the salads are made on-site, and the sandwiches, burgers, fries (including sweet potato fries) are yummy. The prices are generally well under $10 per person, and the dining room is very casual, light and airy. There is a full bar available for those who wish to partake.

As far as I know, the restaurant is NOT open during the summer, though the course itself is available year around. Green fees are 18 holes (walking) $15.00, with a cart, $25. 9 holes (walking) $10.00, with a cart, $16.

Par for the course if you're looking for "old school" golfing
Mar 2015 • Couples
The old Ajo Country Club offers a nice break from usual snowbird haunts and the little cafe serves a great breakfast. Located about 7 miles out from Ajo itself on the Ajo Well Rd, you'll need to follow the signs to the simple dirt parking lot to check in for golf or line up for breakfast. The old course was designed back in the 1940s when Ajo was a thriving company town more or less owned by Phelps-Dodge copper mines. After the mine closed in 1984, golf fans and the new snowbirds volunteered to restore the Country Club and have kept it operating since.

Duffers can have a nice round or two in a mellow, non-competitive atmosphere and finish up at the Clubhouse Cafe, where late breakfasts are a local tradition. The menu specializes in Benedict egg dishes but there is plenty more to chose from.

Bottom line: Good course for the average golfer or those new to the game. Next nearest course is about 100 miles away... and The Monk (that's me!) recommends it more for the restaurant than the course.

Great Breakfast spot!
Dec 2013 • Family
We've enjoyed breakfast here twice. The restaurant is run by volunteers and it has excellent service and outstanding food. The location is a bit out of town but worth the drive. We took our grandson and our kids to breakfast here, and they were very accommodating. Excellent for any type of group.
