This is one of the few original homes remaining from pioneer days. It's a little tough to find as it is tucked between the Library and the Museum a ways away from the road. It's just a quick in and out but you can see how the Pioneers lived.

This piece of Mormon history is easy to miss on a visit to Temple Square, since it is tucked away off the street to the west of the main part of the Square, near the Church History Building. This pioneer log building, built in 1847, is one of only two surviving log homes built by the Mormon settlers upon their arrival in Salt Lake Valley that year. A peek through a window (see the accompanying pictures taken on this visit) reveals the sparse, but neat living arrangements of Mary and Osmyn Deuel and Osmyn's brother Amos in the 15 by 20 foot home.

This is a hidden gem stuck between 2 large buildings. But this positioning shows the past and present of SLC in one view. If you like Western history stop to see this cabin.

You might miss this small cabin situated between the Family History Library and the Church History Museum but it is worth seeing. The cabin is an example of a simple home the Mormon pioneers built upon arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. This is one of only two of the original structures that remain intact. The Deuel family lived here less than two years. The cabin is fully restored and furnished with authentic pioneer artifacts. You cannot go inside the small one-room cabin but you can see inside by looking through the plexiglass viewing area. The cabin gives great insight into the lifestyle of the Mormon pioneers. Take time to see the many native vegetables and plants in the gardens around the cabin.

This small log cabin is just outside the southwest entrance to Temple Square, tucked between two large administration buildings. The front of the cabin is open and through a plexiglass door I was able to see the interior and it’s period furnishings. The cabin dates back to 1847 and was moved from its original location where Pioneer Park now stands.

A stop by the Pioneer log cabin while visiting the Family Library for your ancestry research is appropriate to see how the pioneers lived in the early West.

The Deuel cabin is tucked away in a little plaza between the Museum of Church History and the Family History Library, just across the street from Temple Square. It's easy to walk by without noticing it, but I highly recommend stopping to take a look. It's the original cabin of one of the first Mormon pioneers, and is stocked with items typical of the time. Equally interesting is the landscaping surrounding it. According to the plaques, the plants are native to Utah, and are landscaped to demonstrate in which the environs in which you would find them. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time while you're touring Temple Square.
