I walk/hike there at least once a week. Families are always there enjoying the grounds, the stream. Lots of dog-walkers. You can continue up the road which is restricted to foot/bike travel. Feel safe and there are always people around....safe.

OK PEOPLE. Please stop reviewing this as an outdoor mall! It is an outdoor hiking area that actually has a trail, waterfalls and a creek. It is part of Memory Grove with many Tributes to WWI veterans and is a little oasis inside the city. it is a wonderful park for families, hikers, joggers, walkers, and has an off-leash area for dogs and their companions. The water and the trees make it an ideal area to enjoy your day, even in hot weather.

There aren't too many cities where you can access an excellent hiking/walking/biking trail. In Salt Lake City, all of this is readily available in City Creek Canyon. Beginning at Memory Grove, which is a 5 to 10 minutes walk from downtown, the paved trail continues for up to 7 miles. For more harden hikers, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail can be accessed from City Creek.

For the last 25 years, I've lived within one-mile of the entrance to City Creek Canyon, and I've walked, run, and ridden a bike in the canyon many times. Its small, winding road takes you alongside a babbling stream and through wooded areas. It's very pretty and is a good place for exercising or having a picnic (there are a few picnic tables along the road). If you visit Salt Lake City and enjoy the out of doors, you should definitely experience City Creek Canyon. But, if you do it on a bicycle, be very careful on the descent, which, although not terribly steep, allows you to achieve a high rate of speed if you don't use your brakes. Two colleagues of mine had horrible bicycle accidents (independent of one another) while making that descent. No one else was hurt in either accident, but the consequences for my colleagues were devastating. So enjoy but exercise caution.

City Creek Canyon is a local favorite - those of us who live and/or work in the downtown area know that it is easily accessible throughout the year, safe, and well maintained. On site ranger station at the base of the canyon is reassuring since we do have a large homeless population that camps in the area. Hike during the day, stay on the trails, and you'll be fine. Be aware...mountain lions do roam the area and we do have tarantulas. Leave them alone...and they will leave you alone.

City Creek Canyon is two parts - the lower area is Memory Grove dedicated to the memory of our fighting troops a beautiful park with memorials throughout. As you walk through the Grove you come to a dirt walking trail that goes through trees and is next to the creek. It is an off leash dog area, so our dog loved running along the trail and playing in the stream. Walk is easy to moderate - no cars in Memory Grove. Upper City Creek is a road that goes for some miles up the canyon. Cars are only allowed with a reservation to one of the picnic sites.

I love hiking, biking, fishing and driving up City Creek canyon. There are even a couple of sport rock climbing routes (not great, but fun if you want to just go do a quick climb). I live downtown and it's amazing how quickly you can feel out of the city. The lower canyon is nice and has several picnic areas along the creek. The upper canyon is lovely to hike. There are cool rock formations and several river crossings. There are somewhat frequent bear and cougar siting so beware. Also I have run into moose in the upper part.
It's only open to vehicles on even days and bikes on odd days. People can walk up at anytime. It costs 3$ for cars and they don't have change.

I love the City Creek Canyon and Memory Grove area. There are always friendly people walking, hiking, biking, running. I run here often with my dog and also alone. Great way to get into nature and enjoy this beautiful valley.

I had a few hours to fill before heading back home after a week at a conference. This little hike allowed me to finally stretch my legs after hours of listening to sessions. You can head up the road on the right side of the capitol building, until you read the top end of the park (I think I never saw a single car on my side of the road the 25 minutes I walked up there). Then come down by the creek all the way down into town. You go from somewhat nature to a beautifully maintained city park area. My guess is that I walked a good four miles on my little outing. And remember, it is right by downtown SLC, so don't expect pristine, but it's still quite nice.

Downtown canyon with hiking, biking, and picnicking. Open year round! Picnic tables available as well as restrooms. A running creek too! Beware of bike schedules in the summer (odd dates for bikes, even dates for cars, all days for walkers).

What days are open to vehicle travel in upper canyon?
Are reservations required to just drive up canyon?
Are there any fees?

Vehicle travel is allowed on even numbered days if you have a picnic spot reserved up the canyon. Not sure if vehicles are allowed without a picnic site reservation. There is a small fee of just a few dollars to reserve a picnic site. These can be made through Salt Lake City Water Department.
