Amazing place!!!! Too glad to visit. Ice caves were too good. One does not need to be a winter sports enthusiast to be able to do this with guides. You do need to be less than a certain body weight to be able to move...More

The walk is magnificent - the bush, the birds, the views, waterfalls etc... so much to look at that we took way longer than the prescribed 90 mins. The day we were there is was not overly busy and we love that people on the...More

I spent a thousand bucks for my family to do the heli glacier landing trip.. well worth it even if you only land on snow for 10 mins. No other way will you see such a beautiful view but by being airborne

Well maintained trail leads up valley to glacier face. Great views along the way. Easy 90 minute round trip unless you stop to gawk like we did!

Good hike through a forested area then to the more open area towards the glacier. I didn't walk all the way in but just halfway. Could see the glacier well even at that point already. Go for it!

I ostensibly wanted to take a plane or helicopter ride to the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers but the weather grounded all flights.... instead, I got into the FJG park and walked a trail and climbed up to the glaciers terminal area. It was blocked...More

We chose to park and walk to the glacier (free!). I would defiantly recommend getting there early in the morning, it's less crowded and easy to park. Depending on how the clouds are you could get a great view or barley see it. It looks...More

Even though we had a budget, we couldn't miss getting on a helicopter flight to check the beautiful Franz Josef Glacier. It was amazing! It was the clear blue sky, the ice and us up there. An incredible experience! Highly recommended! Unfortunately we didn't have...More

The preceding day was gloomy; we thought - perhaps walk the glaciers Saturday, 'do' Lake Matheson and hope by Sunday it would be better. Woke to a stunning day Saturday and moved like lightning - were on a flight and touched down on Franz Josef...More

You will walk 1.5h return to Franz Josef glacier, where you are able to walk to a viewing platform which is approximately 750 meters from the glacier. The Fox glacier walk is 1h return and you can go closer to the glacier... More
Hello, I'm travelling to nz in may and was wondering if Franz Josef and fox glacier should be done on 2 separate days? Is a guided tour recommended for both Franz Josef and fox glacier? We are in our late 20s with ok fitness. Would we need special gears for the walk/ climb if on our own? Thanks!

Advisable to take tours on different days to actually get flavor of glacier.
I am visiting Franz Josef on 26-Feb and will be with my young family - 3 1/2 and 5 months old kids. I was wondering what options I had to see either FJ or Fox glaciers given that walking for more than 30 mins on anything but flat-ish ground will not be possible. I will have a carrier for the 5 month old. Could anyone recommend anything appropriate, please?

There is a car park near to the start of the park trail. From memory it wasn't a difficult walk to the nearest point that you can get to the glacier, which isn't that near really. Watch out for the streams becoming quickly... More
