It is a short drive from the franz josef town. There is a trail from the parking lot to the glacier. The walk is about an hour long and a lot is on gravel deposit by the glacier. There were no snow accumulation on the ground when we were there so it is not that difficult even crossing the stream... More

The glacier itself is shorter than it has been in the past, however it is a beautiful glacier nonetheless. you can either get a helicopter over the glacier, go on a tour on the glacier itself or opt for the free walk to the base of a glacier.

Weather was harsh during our visit Hail and heavy winds did no help. Took on the glacier walk hike which was approximately 1 hour and 30 mind return. Had good view but not too impressed.

The Franz Josef Glacier is nice but has retreated quite a lot. It’s better to see it from afar than going all the way to the end of the trail.

The view from the air is stunning, but getting close to the base of the glacier is absolutely breathtaking. Franz Josef glacier trail hike is a must do and I will do that one more time when I come back in the future.

We had really high hopes for seeing the glacier, but had bad luck in terms of the weather. We did a few hikes (as close to the glacier as you are allowed to walk), but it was very rainy and hard to see. Also, the glacier has retreated so much in recent years (the plaques compare the glacier in the... More

The hike was a nice hike, setting off early in the morning to see the glacier before the clouds came in later on in the afternoon. The walk to the glacier was an easy one, one for anyone at any fitness level. On paper it looks like a fair distance but the target is always in sight and there's plenty... More

Our helihike was cancelled due to bad weather, but we still managed to complete the 90 minute walk before the weather closed in. Great walk, beautiful rugged scenery, and although the glacier is receding it's still amazing to see.

We did the walk by ourselves after having flown over and landed above Franz Josef. We were booked to do it with a guide in the afternoon but wanted to move on so did it alone. I am sure a guide would be quite informative. I needed a couple of rests, it was quite a long walk there and back... More
