About
Lake Matheson is nestled in ancient forest and is famous for mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Its excellent reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water – the result of organic matter leached from the humus...more

I had a very enjoyable walk round the lake, despite deteriorating weather, it was well worth the effort. The path was well maintained with picture perfect viewpoints, which meant that I didn't have to try too hard to get good photos!

The walk to the nearest viewpoint is about 15mins. It is a relatively comfortable walk. The view from the Jetty viewpoint is beautiful but the overcast was present the whole time we were there.

Visiting Lake Matheson several times but the last was in Jan 2018. Lovely relaxing walk with stunning views of Fox Glacier on a clear day. The cafe at the lake is also lovely. Worth a visit.

A most enjoyable 90 minutes at a well maintained free tourist attraction. Good parking parking facilities, information & cafe. For the best experience it is best to visit when the weather is calm & the water still to maximise the reflections from the lake. The...More

Maybe it was the weather, but we walked the entire circuit and it was a solid 1/10 all the way, view wise. Do yourself a favour and leave immediately if the view is not great at the first stop, because it's not going to get...More

If you want to see the reflection, go early. We were there around 6.30am. Water was dead calm and we can see the reflection clearly.

We were here on a poor weather day. It was dry but we could not see the mountain tops and reflections on the lake were poor. However, we had a delightful walk, good vegetation and pleasant views

The walk around Lake Matheson took us about 90 minutes. The scenery was beautiful, with Mt. Cook in the background, but unfortunately due to the clouds, we were unable to get good pictures reflecting the mountains in the Lake. The walk was good, both uphill...More

From here, you're able to catch a view of Mt Cook. The walk is easy but time-consuming. However, it's all worth it as you'll greeted by an eye-opening sight.

Trip report of our 2 week South Island trip (7 Replies)
Finally we were able spend time to write about our unique experiences in New Zealand. It was a longtime dream. We covered south island in 2 week trip (11th-25th may). Thanks to the valuable information from tripadvisor, the trip turned out to be a great one. In short, South Island is extremely beautiful. We used aatravel for route planning. Day 1: Landed in Christchurch after a long flight from India via Singapore; we reached in the morning around 11am; our host Denise from Lilac rose...More

11-days around South Island in a campervan with a 4yo in tow (7 Replies)
Hi all, Would appreciate any feedback on my draft itinerary - mostly that it is not too tough on the kid (each journey not too long, lots of stops, short walks, and activities are kid-friendly). Unfortunately, I've had to cut out Milford Sound from my main draft as my thinking is that the drive to Milford and back (even if over 2 different days) is long and, well, the kid may not be very appreciative of getting out of a long car ride to jump on a cruise "just for" outstanding scenery! A...More

Sorry, but you have some exceedingly full days planned - this is not a schedule I would inflict on any 4yo. Plus points to consider - - day 1 - have you just arrived in the country? - best not drive on arrival - you will be jet lagged - and jet lagged drivers make mistakes. There have been some recent horrific accidents. You have an entire day devoted to Chch at the end of your trip - makes more sense to have it at the beginning. - day 4 is far too long - Dunedin is a fabulous city...More

You have a great trip planned. I also question three nights Kaikoura - I think one is plenty. You would have 1/2 day when you arrive and the following morning to explore before moving on. Kaikoura to Hokitika via Arthur's Pass is over 6 hours driving - perhaps overnight at AP? Doubtful Sound overnight? I've done two - Real Journeys and Fiordland Expeditions - both great. Nothing like rising early and watching dawn break over the fiord. Q'town or Glenorchy? - both have stunning...More
