I have heard so much about the horse tracking in Fox Glacier and although I am not the biggest horse fan I was keen to give it a go! From the moment I drove in I was sold with the well set up yard, very docile horses and how welcoming Chloe and Ang were. They kindly answered all my questions as they prepared the horses for the ride and then we were off! The trek was amazing, cruising along bush tracks, then out into the open by the incredible Cook River and right behind us were the stunning snow capped mountains, amazing scenery!! My horse was perfect, not a thing went wrong and I felt very safe and comfortable. I would highly recommend this trek to others who are keen to do something a little different and the team at Experience Fox Glacier are wonderful to work with! Thank you again!!!

It was our first time riding horses and we had really friendly ones (Willy and Ace), it was a lovely introduction, we loved it! Although it was a cloudy day we still enjoyed the landscape, was nice riding on grass and in the riverbed.
Our guide, Angela was very nice and had lots of information for us about the horses and about activities around the South Island.
We would recommend the experience!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your experience with us. It's great to hear that you loved your first horse riding experience and that it was with us! We are very lucky that the west coast is still beautiful even when the clouds are present, glad to hear that you didn't let this put a damper on your time. We will make sure that Angela sees your lovely comments. We hope that you enjoy the rest of your travels around the South Island.

WOW what a really fun morning. My daughter and I are not totally novice riders but our guides were so amazing. Very knowledgeable guides that really knew their horses and all safety issues were covered. Horse and rider safety was very important to them. Loved the fact that some horses were rescued and destined for a better future. Loved hearing the stories about the horses and other treks fun experiences.

We booked 2 day in advance. We were at the pick up point at 11am for the agreed 11:15. We called a number of times but they never answered. At 12:15 we gave up. We left more messages but they never called back. Strongly recommend spending your time and money on other things in Franz.

Nice horses that turned into a short 1 1/2 hr. Walk with only 2 canters. Time was short due to a sunny day, 5 females and transport back to town. Ride should really be the full 2 hrs. For the price stated. Helmets could use a thorough cleaning as mine smelled like some sort of old lady perfume. Feeding the horse half a carrot was the best part.

We go horse riding a bit as its a family fav thing to do when traveling, The girl who guided us was so rude didn't even say hello and then spoke to us rude, my horse was being kicked by the horse in front scared me so much, my son horse was not allowed near mine cause she said one of us would get a broken bone they would fight, my daughters horse was so far back she keep calling out an was ignored and then at the last 15mins of the walk the guide Renee grumply pulled the horse next to hers. IT WAS HORRIBLE, my kids never want to horse ride again after that. The trek was boring the rainforest goes for 5mins and the rest is just flat boring trail, we had to be 6ft apart when taking photo cause she said our horses would fight. THEN WHEN WE GET BACK THEY WANT CASH, no one told us before hand as all our travel is on credit card, said there machine broken so said we would transfer the money, but got nothing but threats to go to police...like its our fault...we have transferred it, only because we are honest people, not because it was worth a cent!!!.DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY GOING HERE.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry to hear your trip was “not enjoyable” and “boring” that is definitely not what we want to hear or pride ourselves on. As for the horses being grumpy and the customer service I would really like to hear more on this. Again we apologise for our eftpos machine being down, it was out of our hands also not being able to process transaction while being offline. This is why Renee asked you if you could pay cash. It was absolutely no problem for you to pay by internet banking but the fact we actually had to go to the motel you guys were staying in to try and make contact with you after you guys not coming back was really disappointing. If you had asked if internet transfer was ok before leaving and not returning nor getting in contact with us after numerous phone calls and messages would have made things a bit more easy and understandable for us, however we do not blame you for our eftpos machine being offline at the time. Please feel free to email me with any queries or questions in regards to your experience. We wish you safe travels and hope you enjoy the rest of New Zealand. Kind regards, Glacier Country Horses. We drove past the yard on the way to the Fox Glacier Helihike. On the way back to our hotel we stopped at the yard to inquire about the possibility of going on a trek before we left the area. The lady we spoke to was very friendly, and said that she could either take us out for a trek at that moment, or the next day with another couple who had booked a ride. As we were not wearing appropriate clothing to jump straight onto horseback we opted for a trek the next day. The lady explained that the yard was not technically open on Christmas Day, but offered to take both ourselves and the other couple out anyway. We agreed to a 10am ride, but we're instructed to be at the yard at approximately 9.45am. We arrived at 9.45am, and the other couple were already there. We waited until 10.15 before we gave up waiting and left.

We are not upset about the fact that nobody wanted to work on Christmas Day - I do not blame anyone for wanting to spend the day with their families instead of at work. We are upset that someone made a booking that they did not keep, which essentially wasted our time.

We booked 2 hours ahead, turned up 15 minutes early, waited 45 minutes so waited 1 hour in total. We did the 1.5 hour trek which cost $580 for our family of 4, with no discount for children like some places we had enquired about in Wanaka. The horses were well-behaved and gentle and the scenery of the glacial moraine was impressive. You will slosh through muddy rainforest, canter a few times on the moraine, walk past cows and the last 1/2 hour is very slow. This was more of a horse riding experience for our children. I was expecting the guide to give us commentary about the geology and history of the area but it would have been difficult as we were riding in a long straight line. The trek boasts "the best views anywhere in town" but I disagree, you can see great views for free if you do the glacier walk. Unfortunately we saw rubbish during the walk too.

What annoyed me the most is the owner-operator guide constantly took calls and messages during the ride which seemed unprofessional but I suppose can't be helped. And the 2nd guide spent most of the time on the phone as well. I tried to ignore this and enjoy the view.

I would advise some head covering, maybe a cap or shower cap as the helmets absolutely stunk of other people's sweat and we all had to go back to our accommodation and wash our hair to get the smell out.

I won't say I'm more than a beginner because I've only taken a few lessons and probably ridden about 10 times but I could take a nap on this trail ride and wouldn't know the difference. The pace is mind-numbing. The horses are not brainwashed trail horses because they do respond so I can only guess that the issue is with the guides. One of the guides would drag the horses around instead of go "hey, why don't you bring the horse over here?" I thought that was really odd. My suggestion would be to pay attention when asking people about their horse riding experience instead of just pointlessly going through the motions. Another possibility for the most boring horse ride ever is that it was busy season and the horses were working a lot so they could be taking it easy on the horses. If that's the case, I would rather pay more, have them book less people and get a quality ride rather than go down in my memory as the "most boring ride ever".

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us. We are sorry that you were disappointed with your horse ride - we pride ourselves on having magnificent scenery, well behaved horses and a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our riders. We do try to ensure that all people that are competent on a horse do get to go for a few trots on our shorter trips and generally we try and direct more experienced riders to go on our longer 3 hour trek which allows you to do quite a bit of trotting and cantering. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip around NZ. Kind regards, SWHT.
