if you like bees and honey this is the place for you. You can see the bees working and buy honey and bee products.
We had ice creams in the cafe vanilla and honey and strawberry and honey both were large and delicious. Not too sweet either . The young girl serving was friendly and chatty and let us have a taste. The icecream is only sweetened by the honey and I am salivating as I write this.
At the time of writing there are only 5 cases of coronavirus in New Zealand I believe from the same family.

Locate just after the tunnel heading north to Whangarei this is a great place to stop for a coffee, food & visit to the honey centre.
The Hive Cafe serves variety of foods, cakes, ice creams & drinks. There Mocha was excellent & staff offered great service.
Plenty of parking including mini or camper vans.
Great place to stop on way north to stretch the legs & relax before heading north.
In the Honey Centre (free access) you will find a world of honey & there are tasting jars to try.
You will also see 3 large glass panes that are real life working bee hives. Great educational place for little ones if they have never seen how honey is really made.
Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Enjoy - I did

The Honey Centre was part of our chartered tour stop for -- "Great Tastes of Matakana Tour". The tour was hosted by Bush and Beach -- offering good value for your time and money, professionally guided, comfortable tour, spectacular and inspirational views.
The Honey Centre Building-Site is Average:
We were expecting more from our tour stop here. We were expecting more of a visitor/interpretive centre designed to educate people.
Time Allowance:
It is a very simple place. Since it more of a honey store you probably need no more than a fifteen to thirty minute stop allowance.
One Display:
They have the largest live hive of honeybees on display.
The Best Part:
The Honey Centre allows for taste testing of a full range of quality honey. That is the best part!
Need For Improvement:
This spot does deliver in giving you a taste and a small view into New Zealand's honeybees. But the Honey Centre 'tour' requires you to have forthrightness to start a conversation with the one staff person and to ask questions or it will be only on written cards/pamphlets. It was a quiet day for visitors so it was not the fact of there being no time allowance. Being on a Bush and Beach tour we were expected (as per their routine planned tour stops). We were handed taste tester spoon/s and then left to our own.
Other Products:
In addition to offering many ways to have honey they have skincare products too.
Lack of Overall Enthusiasm:
We are glad we went but we were expecting more enthusiasm...with a presentation, video/discussion or someone from the beekeeping/nature or wildlife profession.
More Input:
It would be nice to have more interaction from a bee farmer (retired or a volunteer) staffer-with a love for explaining factoids...learning...sharing passion of honeybees. Perhaps even putting on display -- honey making equipment. As a public interaction it was more of a honey store.
We know that honeybees play a vital role in the production of so many crops....but there is more to know and explore and why not at a the Honey Centre [for all ages].
We still recommend a stop even if it is to taste the honey and buy honey lozenges etc.
As tourists we were not able to buy usual size jars of liquid honey here as the airport security does not allow for honey, jams and jellies etc. We suggest that the Honey Centre sells smaller jars --perhaps 1 oz jars -- so tourists can buy a variety of small ones and finish them up before travelling by plane to another country/heading home.
The Honey Centre claims to have the best honey in New Zealand....we can say that we enjoyed it.

I visited today to meet a friend for brunch so only went to the cafe. It is absoluely grotty and is in major need of an overhaul. The kitchen was closed and there was very limited food in the cabinet. The two black couches are filthy dirty with all the vinyl worn off - they need to be biffed.
Two bus loads of people arrived so god knows what they ate.
will not be going back in a hurry :(

Stopped by on our way up to the Bay of islands. We missed the show but we had a great time tasting honey and purchasing beeswax items. It is a great little stop for a bathroom and gift shop experience.

we were a croup of four intending to visit the Honey Center. Thought we would have a coffee and cake first. Upon entering the cafe a young girl was hoovering, it was 2.50 pm.She keep on hoovering so I asked her how long they were open till. The reply was 3.30pm, so we thought thats good we have enough time. A family of three were seated. Another lady was out the back cleaning the kitchen and eventually came out and each request was greeted with a rolling of the eyes. We asked if we could sit outside. Upon bringing our order the young lady complained about serving outside having to walk on the peebles. i had once again asked the other staff lady what time they closed she said four o`clock. At 3.20 pm they locked the door to the cafe. The gentleman in the honey shop was very helpful and friendly. The cafe staff should take lessons from him.
