Fascinating climb up the local volcanic cone with a bit of history thrown in. Great views back over the harbour and out to sea. Bit of a scramble at the end so some level of fitness/dexterity required. Totally worth the effort.

Although you can see Mount Paku from quite a distance (we got our first sight on this occasion driving down the SH25 at Pumkin Hill), it's not so obvious how to get to it from the town. There are no signposts so we just asked. From the main road through Tairua turn onto Manaia Road and continue straight "keeping the water to your right" until you reach Paku Drive (near Tairua Beach). Go right and follow that road up the hill. There is a car park on the left however we missed it and kept driving until we reached the turning point at the end of Paku Drive. We were able to park in the street and just walked a few metres to where a pole indicated "walkway". It looks like someone's driveway however just stick to the grassy slope and you will be fine. The trail is fairly steep and winds its way through woodland with occasional views between. The last stage is the most tricky where the "path" involves some clambering over boulders but thankfully it's a short section. We saw entire families with kids and dogs negotiating this so it's not beyond most people's ability although for those less able it will be. The view from the top is excellent, looking over to Pauanui Beach, to Tairua and the mountains beyond. Return by the same route. It doesn't take long to climb depending upon your starting point - in our case about 15-20 minutes each way at the most. This was our second visit to Tairua and we're glad this time, years later, we made it up Mount Paku. We visited in March 2020, prior to Covid-19 lockdown.

We drove to Tairua to see Mt. Paku, a volcanic peak at the tip of the Tairua harbor. We were able to drive within 1 km of the summit, parking our car on Tirinui Crescent. From there, it was a short but very steep climb, aided in part by handrails. At the top, the view, in all directions, was amazing. This walk is supposedly graded "EASY"! I don't know about that, but the view was definitely worth the climb.

Extremely steep but short climb to get to the start of the track but the views were amazing. The track itself isn't that long so we enjoyed the walk up. Would recommend to see this if visiting the area.

It's worth climbing up the steep path to the top of Mount Paku, as the 360 degrees view from the top is wonderful.
