About

Great Museum!!

I really enjoyed visiting this museum!! The first floor is full of very interesting fossils. The second floor has great mineral specimens. I was impressed by the quality of the museum and that it was free.

Interesting museum

The building was built during the 40s with this museum in mind, since the valley of Tarija is a great archaeological resource site, especially for dinosaurs bones. The problem with this museum is that it is small, although all pieces have a small explanation, it looks like they do what they can with the few resources they have.

The second floor they are showing some tools made by local old cultures and some stones found in the valley, and from the windows I saw that they have more material but they don't have the space in the museum to show all their new findings.

Currently it is managed by the local public university (UAJMS), the entrance is free and you only might need between 30 to 50 minutes to visit this place if you want to read and see everything in detail.

dinosaur bones galore

Dinosaur bones I have never seen before. The stories about each find is fascinating. At a cost of only 5bs it is definitely worth it.

I loved seeing the Andean elephant found in 1999. Although a small museum it is worth making the trip to see it.

Something to do for an hour

Small little muesem, has a variety of stones/gems/ ancient pottery and dinosaur bones found in bolivia. The staff were good, didn't speak English but tried to explain as much as they could.
Free entry. Good thing to do after a cup of tea/coffee in the afternoon.
Two story old building, probably need 30mins -1 hour to look at everything.
Really nice time. If you are in tarija and walking around the city, check this place out.

I love this place

It's small (just two small floors) but that all this local information is packed into this tiny space and it is totally free makes it a very worthwhile adventure. We have visited several times and it never fails to delight. Really amazing that in this area of Bolivia fossils and dinosaur bones can still be found. Just fabulous in my opinion.

This museum is a true gem. The fossils of the region are incredible and the life size replicas super educational. The archaeological collection is well developed. Fun for all.
