This is an absolutely beautiful church. Built by the French Canadian immigrants that settled in New Bedford, this church is a tribute to that local heritage and a gift to those who visit.

I grew up in this parish, and went to their School. I did all my Sacraments, and even Married here. No other place compares, because the Church is so beautiful. My children were baptized here, but as the yrs went by, we moved out of district, and registered to a different Church to give it a try for a yr or 2, it didn't live up the standards I was used to, so we registerd back to St. Anthony. This church is beautiful to me, it's what I'm used too. It may look dark and dungy on the outside, you have to go inside to see the full beauty. I remember on certain holidays, they would light up the church during Communion, that was a treat. We had relatives who would come from out of town, just to see the Church lite up! Between the singing, and the lighting, it always took my breath away, and made me tear up,especially the Christmas Mass....that's how beautiful it is! Plus the Organists during my time there, Mr. Labens (The best)...and David Langevin, were exceptional!

I was raised Catholic and St. Anthony's was my parish church so I am well qualified to expound on its virtues. The steeple is one of the tallest objects in the city and can be seen from quite a distance. The church is of Gothic design and is about 100 years old. Another reviewer said the outside was dirty but that is an error. What might to some look dirty is actually the color of the stones used to build the church. The interior is awe inspiring given the magnitude of the building, the statuary, the painted ceiling ( similar to but on a lesser scale than St. Peter's in Rome, Italy. ) When all the church lights are lit, the sight of it is fantastic. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen as much as when I was younger due to electricity costs. Anyone who enjoys
great edifices will not regret a visit to one of the best churches in the entire state.

This chuch is in a diamond in the rough. It is in a not-so-great neighborhood. It is dirty and needs cleaning on the outside. We found the doors locked, so went to the Perish Office and hit the buzzer. After a few minutes, a lady answered. We told her that we wanted to see the church. In a few minutes, Father Murphey came to let us into the church and give us a personal tour. I have traveled extensively in Europe and have seen many cathedrals. The interior of this church can compete with most of the cathedrals I have seen in Europe. It is exquisite. It is not near other "tourist sites" in New Bedford, but worth the trip.

We attended the 10:30 mass and had a wonderful, unique experience. We arrived a little early and my husband was wondering if we could see the choir loft. As we were standing there, a woman invited us up and as we were walking up.the stairs we discussed where we were from and mentioned that we sing in our church choir. She invited us to stay and sing in choir loft. It was awesome!

Off the beaten path, this historic gem is a must see for an East Coast cultural tourist that loves architectural marvels. It is often locked, so call ahead or simply knock on the parish office door to have the attendant open it for you.
Aside from being an architectural marvel, this church is inspirational and I am told that Christmas Midnight Mass is breathtaking.
100% worth the time to find it!!

This without a doubt is one of the most beautiful churches in the country. When you step inside it's like a view of heaven , with all the angels and the most amazing picturesque religious scene above the altar. Wonderful stained glass windows. Christmas concerts are great ! Visit many times

We stopped here because this was my grandfathers church many years ago. It's a beautiful church and a short drive from the whaling attractions down the street.

I've gone a few times and see more and more of the inside of the church each time I go. Yes, the mass is long=but, for a church that is celebrating 100 years...when they light up the inside fully...its breathtaking with the choir singing....almost a bit of heaven on earth!
