My favorite beach

I hesitate to recommend this beach, because it has become very popular, and now, sadly, crowded. Go early, if you want parking, quiet and shade.

I rushed out of my crummy hotel in Kihei first thing in the morning to get a gander at Ulua Beach, which had been pretty heavily promoted by a few guide books, and I parked, walked up, saw a few feet of sand, some heavy surf, a few tide pools, about 100 people, and a little naturalist at a stand,... This beach was great for snorkeling and the waves were not too bad the couple days we went. There is limited parking but we didnt have an issue when we went in the morning around 10 or 11.

We used to like this beach the best of all the beaches on Maui but back then there used to be maybe a dozen people on the beach at any one time. It has built up a lot in the past dozen years and is very crowded and the sand smells funny. I would much prefer the beaches near the... More

There are no hotels fronting this beach, only private homes and condo developments. But the beach is excellent - no rocks, except at either end of the half mile sweep of sand (where there is passable snorkeling). The depth of the beach is excellent, with lots of room for beach chairs to be set back from the surf.

During my visit to ulua beach, the tide was unusually high due to the south swell. Visiblity was very poor for snorkelling with too much sand coming with the strong tide. However, the beach itself was so beautiful. The sand there was really soft. Also, I was able to hear whale whistling. Only bad part of this beach is that... More

Go near the rocks and you'll see lots of fish - with or without a mask! We even had a sea turtle swim near us! Better than Wailea beach which was quite crowded.

Enjoyed the snorkeling, playing in the waves and body boarding. It was extremely crowded, so if that bothers you maybe find a different spot.

We left around 8:00am from Lahaina for the 50 minute drive to Ulua Beach so that would be able to find parking in the small lot. Though a small beach in an elegant residential area, it was a terrific place to snorkel with a volunteer-manned table on the beach offering tips on what to see in the water and respectful... More
