This was a fascinating place to visit. Definitely the occurrences during the 1920's in Cape Breton coal mining is a stain on Canadian history. Our guide, Wishie, did a great job although he was rather soft-spoken and difficult to hear at times. A previous reviewer stated that the museum was handling COVID restrictions well. We must strongly disagree. Although masks are required in the museum, physical distancing is non-existent. During the initial monologue by the retired miner before descending in to the mine, we were sitting less than 6 inches from a stranger, not 6 feet. Same uncomfortable closeness in the mine but then as we were walking up the ramp out of the mine, we were told to walk in single file 6 feet apart so as to comply with COVID regulations. There were 20 people in our group and the staff tried to add more. If the museum ran more frequent tours, groups could be smaller and safer.

Dear dkbaker, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on our Museum with TripAdvisor. We are very pleased that you had a fascinating visit. And yes your are right, we are struggling to work within the parameters of Covid restrictions. Because sometimes social distancing can be an issue, we require anyone entering the museum to wear a mask. Safe travels, Mary Pat

The Miners Museum was an awesome place to visit, and going down in the mine was an unforgettable experience. I went with my two boys, 13 and 16. The most memorable part for us was the guide, Terry! This man was an amazing blend of down to earth humor, while presenting a highly educated articulation of the facts . He was very informative, and made it fun for everyone. There were 21 of us on the tour, and he warmly engaged all of us. We were able to get a real sense of what it must have been like for the men and animals that worked down there. We highly recommend visiting the Miners Museum, and if you are lucky enough to get Terry for a guide, well Bonus! Ask him to tell you about John sneaking nails home in his lunch box.

Great tour with Wishie, a retired miner. He does a great job of telling you what it was like to work in the mines. Be prepared to wait a bit for the tour to start. My parents and I arrived at 10 am and the first tour went at 11:15 am. However, if you arrive too much after may not get on the first tour. Tour went until just after 1 pm.

This is always a highlight of our visits to CB. I'm from Glace Bay and have visited many times, but I always learn more details on every visit. The tour guides have a wealth of knowledge and experience, and always give a great tour, and it's always a new experience every time.

The mine simulator is really well done.

The miner's village offers a great insight into the daily life of the miners, and the history of the area.

My kids always insist on going back every year, they love to learn more about the history of the town and the difficult life of the miners.

I highly recommend visiting here.

We absolutely loved our tour!!! Our guide was Eric a miner with 30 years punched. The history of the company and its treatment of the workers was unbelievable. But the actual fondness of Eric’s coworkers and community was enviable. It’s something you have to see to crawl along in a 42” high coal seem and imagine doing that everyday is a once in a lifetime experience. Honestly the best tour I’ve ever done of anything anywhere !!
If your in cape Breton make the time it will not disappoint. Warning it is strenuous on the legs and back

Dear Ronward, Thank you for your great review! Your experience is exactly what we hope our visitors will take away with them. Even the uncomfortable moments of crouching through 4'2" tunnels help us connect to the experience of the miner's daily life. Safe travels, Mary Pat

A lovely place to learn about the history of coal mining in the region. I have been here a few times taking various visitors to the museum. Take the tour and enjoy the history given by real coal miners and their experiences.

I don't have anything bad to say, they basically have adapted it nicely do to Covid.

This is a must go to, we went to Louisburg in the morning and Miners Museum in the afternoon! The underground tour is great, amazing stories that keep you entirely engaged. Tough on taller people or if you have a bad back. Next time I will bring a kneeling pad to be more comfortable during the stops. Perhaps they could offer that there?

Very interesting, entertaining tour given by retired miners. A little uncomfortable and cold for awhile since you go down into the actual mine and cannot stand upright if you are over 5 feet tall. My only complaint was that there were 2 men in an office with the door open talking through the tour guides entire introduction. I had to move to the other side of the room but could still hear them over the guide. Very annoying.

Dear Baxwitch666, Thanks for posting your review on TripAdvisor. I will mention to the guides that they should close the door if they are in there when another guide is giving his introduction. Safe travels, Mary Pat

This Museum was one of the highlights of our vacation in Atlantic Canada. It was so well done and we learned so much. The animation and the guide was superb. It was heart wrenching to hear about the life of miners and their families. The quality of this Museum is exceptional. It would be a very good experience for children. The mine tour brought home the realities of what working life was like. Thank you so much.

Dear Arlylew, Thanks you so much for posting your review on TripAdvisor. We work very hard to give our visitors an authentic look into the coal mining culture of Cape Breton Island. Thanks so much for letting us know that you thought the animation and guide were successful in that endeavour. Safe Travels, Mary Pat

We enjoyed the tour and the guide was a wealth of information. Friendly staff welcomed us and were so helpful. Worth the time to tour about 1-2 hours. Be prepared to experience what it was like back then to be a miner. Shoes and jacket would be good to wear to be comfortable.
