Lovely Venue

We always enjoy going to one of the summer plays put on by the association. We usually arrive early and do a short hike on Tamalpais. If it’s a hot day, seek out a shaded seat - you won’t regret it. Quite a bit of parking if you get there early.

We drove up and hiked down. Saw my favorite view of Sab Francisco so far. If you don't like tge outdoors maybe you should pick another activity. Getting off the mountain with 3700 other guests is complicated.

I have see plays in London, Singapore, New York, San Francisco and Mill Valley. Mill Valley is my favorite. We saw Momma Mia on the sing-along day. Pure entertainment. I strongly recommend it. We loved the show.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience--looking down across the Golden Gate Bridge to everybody's favorite city, San Francisco
May 2017
In San Francisco during May and June? Check to see if the Mountain Play is happening--weekends during much of May and June each year--Disney's Beauty & the Beast in 2018. Besides the excellent quality of the musical play itself, make a day of it by catching a free relay bus from the sea-level marvelous town of Mill Valley, all the way up Mount Tamalpais to the 2,000-foot level Depression-era rustic amphitheater. Get there early in order to snag a spot either under the huge sunshade awning or make your best guess where the shade from the native trees will travel over the course of the afternoon.

Spread the ground-cover you brought along over a section of the native-rock seats (some of them a beautiful green serpentine) to save your place while your group takes a hike on the mountain while you wait for the overture and the opening scene.

There's a ton more information at the Mountain Play website.

Thank you for describing great advice for our theatre goers. It's not your normal theatre experience. This year, due to having to renegotiate our contract with the shuttle buses, shuttles from Mill Valley are $5 per person, but still worth the money, stress-free arrival, and fun way to explore Mt. Tam.

Unique opportunity to see Beauty & the Beast- performed on a mountain top
May 2017
This was a wonderful presentation in a unique setting on top of Mt Tam. Complete with orchestra. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

One of the Best

We have gone to the Mountain Play nearly every year for 30 years, and this year's production of West Side Story was one of the best. The woman who plays the leading role of "Maria" was wonderful, both as a singer and an actress. I have seen West Side Story dozens of times and still cried in the end because of her fine acting. The choreography and dancing were excellent. And the set was also particularly impressive for the Mountain Play. It is a wonderful day, especially if you take a picnic lunch and hike down the mountain afterwards. Loved it.

A fun tradition and a high quality production

This is a fun day but you will be in the sun for a lot of it unless you get there super early to get shady seats. Rent the stadium seats so you have a comfy seat. Bring sun lotion, hat, and a picnic lunch. Also fun to do with friends.

Worth the trip

It's been years since I've been to the Mountain Play -- and now I remember why I enjoyed it so much. This year's production was "South Pacific" -- a musical I've seen many times (I could sing the lyrics) -- and it was a wonderful production. The actor playing Emil de Becque was a particular stand-out, with a terrific voice. The surroundings just make these productions even more special -- sitting on top of the mountain in a rustic amphitheater on a beautiful sunny Northern California day seeing a great musical -- like a wonderful dream.

We parked in Mill Valley at Tam High School and took the free shuttle up the mountain -- much easier than driving and finding parking up there -- the shuttles ran frequently and gave you a chance to look at the scenery -- from Bay Area fog to bright sunlight. It does get quite warm up there -- sunscreen is a must -- a hat was most welcome -- get there very early if you want a shady spot. Bring a picnic or buy food (mostly sold by non-profits such as the local Rotary Club and the Boy Scouts) and beverages. The only real wait we had was getting standing in line to board the shuttles back to Mill Valley. It's a fun day for the whole family if you enjoy live theater in spectacular setting

Really fun and very professional performance
Jul 2013 • Family
I always love the outdoor play and the festive atmosphere. This is a truly great event for the whole family. The plays are professional and entertaining and the setting is gorgeous. The audience is usually in a great mood. One caveat. BRING WATER and maybe even a little spray bottle or tiny fan as it gets hot and I have seen older folks taken away by ambulance more than once. Bring a hat and hydration and layer up rather than bundle up. The mountain can be chilly but in Summer you are likely to be above the fog and get hot.

A Must Do Yearly
Jun 2013 • Friends
This was our first, and will be an annual day long event. We got to the parking lot at 11:30 for the shuttle, half hour in line then the 30 minute breathtaking ride up the mountain. The bus driver was entertaining as well.

It was so crowded by 1pm that seating for 7 was only way in the back, not optimum, but with dappled shade. It added to the ambiance to have to look around the trucks of oak trees to see the whole stage. We will go MUCH earlier next year, claim our seats, then do some hiking and picture taking. Lots of little children in the audience, so kid noises and distractions plus running around before and after, clueless of the poison oak in some areas.

The Sound of Music was magnificent. Even way in the back the music and words were loud and clear. The acting superb and the stage setup impressive. The rotating scenes were a pleasure to experience and the sidecar motorcycle and the 1938 decked out car wonderful. Two bloopers added to the enjoyment, a screen would not stay open, and the Nazi flag could not be completely taken down.

We took a picnic which was wonderful, and had perfect weather, the weekend before it had been over 100 degrees on Saturday, and cold, with rain at the finale on Sunday so layering, sunscreen, prepare for the elements. Next year we plan lunch picnic and dinner picnic to wait out the line for the shuttle. We kicked back and it took an hour and a half to catch the shuttle without much of a line. Because the shuttle will carry your stuff so one can do the 21/2 hour hike down, we might hike the 8 miles down next year.
Also, I understand that people who donate are given preference to the first buses, that is a wonderful bonus to donating.

If the concessions had stayed open after the performance they probably would have made a fortune. The balloon lady, leaving after a hard days work saw a boys balloon pop and stopped, opened up her suitcase and redid a balloon giraffe, good for her! Absolutely a wonderful, full day.
