Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

Our godson chose this tour and what a super choice it was! Jennifer our guide was excellent...she had the children's attention fully involving and engaging them in the tour. Us older folks found the whole experience both fun and interesting (how harsh was life for a prospector!). We ended panning for gold and some becomming a little "gold fevered"! In... More

My young children were begging to do this the whole vacation, so we checked it out. The establishment is fun to look around and it's a nice atmosphere, and they thought the panning was pretty cool. However, there were a few down sides such as two guides arguing over who had to take us right in front of us (awkward!),... More

So sorry about this situation. I did talk to the two guides and Sara. I explained that discussions like that are not held in front of guests. That is inappropriate. They indicated that was in fun, I still indicated it just wasn'right. Sara was trying to only get the child to stop crying. She is not a a parent and... More

Didn't do any of the tours. We just wanted to do the gold panning. It was fun but a bit overrated. The pans are pre-loaded with gold flakes or gem stones so it wasn't the type of panning that I was looking for. The staff were very friendly and helpful and shop was full of neat stuff.

Sorry about on site panning not meeting your expectations. We have the off site panning or claim panning with reservation you could have panned in the creek using a sluice box, classifier and pan. It is called Claim panning. Pricing and explanation is on our website www.bigthundermine.com. you can book online, reservation is required. We hope you try that next... More

We went on a tour with a Boy Scout troop which wasn't the best because they were wry loud and obnoxious. Our tour guide was very knowledgable which was good. The panning there is just in trowels that people go through every day, so your only going to find little flakes of gold that are worth nothing

I am sorry that your experience with the boy scouts was not very good. We normally do not mix our tours with a group versus a guest tour. Were they being loud on a different tour.? The gold flakes with today's market price $ 1.25 per flake. You should get 4-10 flakes of gold. We do the panning for the... More

Thank you to Big Thunder Gold Mine. We had an amazing time claim panning. Rattlesnake Randy really knew his history. I would definitely recommend if you are going to Keystone. Beautiful hike and country. Very enjoyable. .

What a great stop! We gold panned & gem panned. The staff was super helpful & very knowledgable. Check out Rattlesnake Randy's speed panning. We kept finding gold so time went by fast. The gift shop was very nice as well.

This was one of my children's favorite activities during a two-week vacation from South Dakota to Montana. The mine tour was very interesting and the young guide knew his stuff. After the tour, they taught us how to pan for gold and we all successfully panned several flakes of gold to bring home. We had a wonderful time! Everyone there... More

I only offer reviews when very bad and very good, I am happy to say this one is very good. Big Thunder Gold Mine and Rattlesnake Randy offer an excellent mining opportunity. If you are close by, its worth the drive. If you are looking for a real gold panning experience then this is your stop.
