- phvi2617Anaheim, California647 contributionsMajestic Mt. RainierI only spent half a day here, but wish I could have stayed much longer! Mt. Rainier National Park protects its namesake mountain, with its numerous glaciers, as well as the surrounding meadows and forests. The most popular part of the park is the aptly-named Paradise area. From there, I hiked the Skyline Loop. It's a moderately challenging hike, but well worth the spectacular views of the mountain, Nisqually Glacier, and the Cascade Range. There are several other trails in and nearby Paradise, including the short but pretty walk on the shore of Reflection Lake. I was hoping to explore the Grove of the Patriarchs, but it remains closed due to flood damage. The park is very accessible from the Seattle area. During the summer, be sure to arrive as early as possible to find parking and beat the crowds. There is an excellent visitor center in Paradise with displays, a gift shop, and a small cafeteria.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten November 22, 2023
- Jo ZCold Ash, United Kingdom377 contributionsThe most beautiful volcano in the world in my opinion.I have been here before and loved it, so this time I came early in the season in June with a friend to show her when there was plenty of snow around. You do need to purchase a timed entry for $2 which worked well, it was much quieter than previous trips and we found a parking spot at the most popular Paradise parking area very easily. This is my favourite volcano in the world and I recommend this park for hiking the many trails, some very short, some very difficult. Or just sit in your car and enjoy the scenery if you have mobility problems.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 17, 2024

We arrived at Mount Rainier National Park in the late morning. How something can be so majestic yet so threatening at the same time is pretty amazing. Words really cannot describe the true beauty of this National Park. This is absolutely a 'must see' if you are anywhere even remotely close to this area. Try to get there early as the traffic to gain entry is almost obscene.

On a business trip and came in 1 day early to visit Mt. Rainier. Early spring felt a bit like winter. So beautiful but I should have planned better to rent snowshoes. We enjoyed the drive and the walks we could do. The gift shop at Longmire was very nice. The scenery is beautiful and I hope we’ll get back sometime in the summer.
All cars need chains prior to May 1. We rented some at Paradise Village hotel in Ashford for $20.

Jackie was the PERFECT guide.
Beautiful weather, amazing views and seeing a rainbow at one of the falls was unexpected and breathtaking. I have seen many a waterfall in my life, all shapes and sizes, and never saw anything quite like it. She timed the visit to the falls perfectly so our group would have a good chance of seeing a rainbow.
Food - incredible! I do wish I had the recipes so I could try to duplicate the food at home. Yes, one could see Mt Ranier on their own with a car, but there is no way one group could see all the things we saw in the time allotted unless they’d been there before. Plus, no one in my party had to navigate the curvy mountain roads in the park.
HIGHLY recommend.

We explored Rainier from both the western and eastern entrances. We found the western entrance to be more impacted by tourists. The parking lots were full and the grounds crowded with those trying to catch a peek of Rainier's peak when the clouds cleared. The next day, after having stayed in Packwood, we drove up the east side to the Sunrise entrance. Wow, what a significant difference! Far fewer people. And, hiking trails that allowed us to see the mountain's glaciers in all their splendor. It was truly a life memory.

The park Ranger said it's only sunny about 50% of the time. We count ourselves lucky to have seen the top of the mountain with no clouds to obscure it. Lots of great hikes available. Pretty and easy drive throughout. Hope to come back.

Absolutely breathtaking. The mountaintop itself is just the beginning of things to see. Snow in July is so much fun, but this would be great any time of year. The flora and fauna are so interesting and there are accessible trails for every ability. Don’t miss this.

I did not expect this place to be so beautiful. Visiting in the winter I wanted to see the Kautz Glacier (named in honor of my ancestor, August Valentine), but the park ranger informed me we would get close, but not be able to view this time of the year. On the way through the sights were astounding. The colors, though few are so stark and really make this place pop! Not to mention the size of everything is astounding. We were able to stop and play in Kautz Creek which was quite a nice surprise for me, though not as overwhelmingly beautiful as some of the other stops we made along the way. $30 got us an entry pass for the weekend. This is really a special place and I would love to explore more one day.

We visited MRNP in the Fall last year and experienced its beauty. We drove into the park from Packwood via the 12 and made our way through, enjoying the sights and views, until we reached the Paradise visitor center, where we stopped, before making our way to Longmire. An enjoyable day.

We drove from Tacoma so the drive was quite long. The roads were pretty calm and eventually winding as we got closer to the park and then in the park. The staff at the entrance were very hospitable and humorous. The map provided was very helpful. This was another last minute, unplanned trip for us. We were definitely not prepared, clothing wise. Almost everyone had hiking boots and gear, while we were in sandals or just everyday wear shoes. We had the opportunity to stop at certain areas to take photos. As you drive further into the park you get a better view of Mount Rainier. The park was clean and well maintained. Great experience and would love to go back again someday - this time more prepared.

How long does it take to drive from AShford to Packwood on the road that goes through the park ? About how many miles? and can I pull my camp trailer on that road ok?
Written February 8, 2023
Is the tour still available with the closure of the road into the park? We are planning to go to Seattle in the middle of March 2020 and we are interested in this tour (gourmet and wine lunch, 235.00).
Written February 15, 2020
Your best bet would be to check with the tour operator. They will know and should not book unless they can deliver. I was ther in late summer so not concerned.

Hello. We are heading to the Ashford side for a weekend getaway in October. Anything we absolutely must do or see? Do you recommend booking a hiking tour or should we just wing it on our own? We will have a car and are willing to drive. Than you :)

Agree with previous answer. There is information about trails in NPS website and others. We had an idea what trails to hike and discussed with Park Ranger which was helpful as one of the trails had ice/snow and he recommended against it so we modified our plan.
Truly a beautiful Park.

I am planning a road trip next summer (July or Aug) from Houston to Mount Rainier NP. Can anyone provide me any suggestions on any must see places between Houston and Mt Rainier? TIA.
Written September 22, 2018
We did Glacier, Olympic, Mt Rainier, and North Cascades National Parks in one trip and spent four days in Seattle. Took us 3 1/2 weeks driving from south eastern Missouri. We spent 2-3 days at each park. Time spent really depends on how much hiking you’re planning to do at each location. We didn’t do much but if you’re a hiker, you may need more time at each. As a result of our schedule we were on the move every few days and it got old. If we do National Parks again, we’ll try to find a home base to minimize the packing and unpacking. Good luck!

Hi! Is there any particular roadway best for a scenic ride with pull offs?
Written June 5, 2018
The other answers are referring to the Nisqually entrance which is the southwest entrance. It is about an hour drive (if you dont stop) to Paradise. There are nice views and plenty of places to pull over on that road. You can also enter from the white river entrance which takes you to Sunrise. Sunrise also like paradise has jaw dropping views of the mountain and plenty of hiking. I would say the road to Paradise offers more dawdling opportunities but one advantage of going to sunrise might be less traffic, and possibly less of a backup to get in because it is less used than nisqually.

Hi. We are booked into Ashford for two nights and plan to do a full day in the park on the 31st August. We are five middle aged friends/partners from the Uk, definitely not hikers/campers so the emphasis should be on “gentle” walks/activities! Any suggestions as to how we should plan our one day in Mt Rainier? Should we also plan to take food and water with us or is there opportunities to pick something up in the park? Thank you in anticipation.

First and foremost, you definitely want to take the Road to Paradise and you definitely want to aim to get to Paradise as early in the day as possible, to beat the crowds. I would head straight to Paradise, and do everything else (waterfalls, any other sightseeing) on your way back to Ashford later in the day. August is high tourist season; the parking lot up there gets very full. We arrived at 9:15 with plenty of parking and by noon when we came back down from hiking, the parking lot was really full. That being said, starting from Ashford, this is what you're going to see: If you're inclined, the Highlander Restaurant (along the road you take to get to the park) will give you a real flavor for the local ambiance. We ate here for breakfast the day we left the park, good food reasonably priced, housed in a former schoolhouse, now a restaurant/bar used by the locals. Don't know if they serve dinner. At the Nisqually Entrance, don't miss the historic wooden arch. There's also a cabin (on your right, after going through the arch, but before the Entrance Booth; it's the oldest building in the park. At Longmire you'll pass the National Park Inn. There's a great, peaceful, level trail across the road from the Inn...the Trail of the Shadows; beautiful in the late afternoon with the sun shining through the old growth forest. I suggest you do it on your way back to Ashford at the end of your day; give yourself an hour or so for this. You'll also pass Christine Falls; a pull-off and you can see the falls from the road. Narada Falls is awesome; also with parking facilities along the road. You can see if from the top, however there are some steep steps you can take to the bottom of the falls to a viewing area/platform; we're in our early 70's and do like to hike, but this is not really too difficult to the bottom of the falls for a senior citizen. If you're lucky, there's a beautiful rainbow to be seen from the bottom. We saw it late in the afternoon. Once at Paradise, you'll find that there are a number of paved trails just off the parking lot. It's up to you how far you want to go; the view from the parking lot itself is breathtaking! In the summer the meadows surrounding the mountain are abloom with wildflowers. Take a camera with a zoom lens so you can really see the glaciers on the mountain. One hike/stroll that is definitely doable for you is the short trek to Myrtle Falls; also very near the parking area. The view from the base of the falls, looking back toward the mountain with the falls in the foreground is stunning. Also, take time to stop in to see the lobby of the Paradise Inn; a National Historic Landmark. The Inn has a restaurant (expensive). There's also a grill just off the parking lot...sandwiches, pizza, etc. The park is really big; I don't think you'll have time to do Paradise and Sunrise both in one day. Paradise is a must see. Depending on how much time you spend there, I don't think you'll have much more time than to get as far east as Box Canyon before heading back to Ashford. Enjoy the mountain, the meadows, the waterfalls, the Inn. Mt. Rainier was the highlight of our two week tour of the state of Washington.

What is the best itinerary roar trip to see the best sights in one day .
We will drive up from Portland , spend the day at the park then spend the night somewhere near the park then back to Portland the next day.
Thanks- looking forward to seeing the park since we were there in 1964.

WOW! I agree with all of those who have answered this questions before me. Ashford has many lodges and restaurants. It would be best to call Mr. Rainer National Park. Go online to research the phone number and lodges within the park. There has been a few fronts that have gone through that area so some parts of the park may be closed. I agree with others Paradise Visitor Center is a good viewing and hiking area. Once you enter the park from Ashford you will see a small visitor center where the rangers could give you the best information at this time of year. Enjoy!

what are the hiking conditions on the Panoramic loop?
can you do this without spikes, etc NOW... Junes 6th or so.. 2016
Written June 1, 2016
You should check conditions on the Mt. Rainier website. When I posted my review the road to reflection lake was still closed. So every year is different but with the warm spring I would be shocked if the trails are closed (excluding the higher elevation trails that is)

Taking our grandson, age 12, with us to Ashford to see the Park. Going this August for one week. Are there things particularly interesting for a boy of 12? He loves to swim, photography, fish.
Written January 23, 2016
He'll love all the great views, and hopefully wildlife in Rainier. I can't speak to fishing or swimming, but he'll definitely be able to rock the camera. If hiking is your deal, you can go from easy to extreme, depending on your fitness level.
