Beautiful town and castle on the water
We came by in mid-December and were not only treated to an amazing old town within the outer walls but also having the town set up for Christmas was extra special. We just spent a few hours wandering around and checking out all the shops and a quick stop at the castle as it was at the end of the day. Beautiful town and views from the ramparts.

    Worth the walk
Walk to the top was 100% worth it. The interesting and complicated history of the Knights Templar and the Crusades, and Christianity, and King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and Juana la Loca. Oh my goodness. There should be a Netflix show made from all this drama. We arrived on a beautiful sunny day and the views did not disappoint.

The castle is awesome and the beach is amazing. It's a little off the grid and there are no ubers in the area. Had to call the taxi service several times to get a ride to the train station. Also, they like to party during festivals. A Canon went off at 1am and they were running with bulls.

    Well worth a visit
A very well reconstructed castle overlooking the sea. Highly recommend a visit. Good pamphlet explains each room. Good handrails and solid stairs. Not particularly safe for young children., low ramparts and steep steps.

We didn't visit the castle internally as everything appeared to be shuttered up. But we were underwhelmed really - the rock on which the castle is sited is very developed, and the coast to the North is an absolutely dismal strip of seaside shops, massive concrete hotels and bleak sand.

The castle is attractively lit at night, but the fact is photo's of the roc are carefully cropped. We did enjoy our little hotel though, and enjoyed having a drink and wandering around the proper town to the south of the castle. Found a great cafe in the shopping centre which was spotless and busy, and a bustling bar full of locals on Friday night...all of which created a very favourable impression until we tried the only open restaurant in town...

Moved on the next morning, as nothing to keep us - sorry, Peniscola...

The castle itself and the small town within it are fantastic and cannot fault them. It is definitely worth seeing, however absolutely 100% be careful where you park. The local authority is absolutely useless in this matter. Their parking meters advise the use of the Telpark app to pay for your parking, which we used without issue, and yet still a parking attendant ticketed the vehicle. The app is useless for resolving issues such as this as there is no ability what so ever for us to contest the matter for which we have all evidence required.

Get someone else to drive you there if you have to go.

Located on a beautiful stretch of coastline between Barcelona and Valencia lies the town of Pensicola with it beautiful castle on the hill. It was a bit of a walk, but well worth trekking up the hill to explore inside, see the displays, look over the battlements and explore the walkways leading to various rooms. Knowing that the Knights had built the structure gave a different perception to me, like walking on the path of history.

This castle is right at the beach which gives a unique view while relaxing at the beach. You can also walk inside. The majority of the place is free to enter. One piece of the castle is with a small fee to enter. I think it was the inside of the castle. However, you can enjoy the place without entering the fee area.

An amazing castle, great setting and wonderful views. There is enough in English to help understand the history though most detailed information is in Spanish but a quick online search gives you the depth. Absolutely worth a visit and it's fantastic value compared to many tourist sites, under 9 years old are free, €5 per adult €3.50 for 9-16 year olds. Definitely worth it with lots of choices for a post-visit cervesa 👍

Beautiful castle. It is worth it to stop in Peniscola breaking down a trip from Valencia to Barcelona in half. The castle could be assessed without entrance fee or without much walk. Easy and not complicated. Amazing views from the top. Ancient fortress.

Castle is in a magnificent position at the end of the causeway. We went due to it beginning built by the Knight's Templar.
Lots of character and information available in English.
WARNING - be careful of parking and charges. No signage and we were fined. Paying the fine and how to is another painful story!

The castle is amazing, with a rich history and breath-taking views. Our kids, 9 and 11, were very entertained by interactive projections and loved rumming around. We had a wonderful time visiting this 800 years old fortress and learning so much about the history of the area.

We did not have the possibility to go inside as we arrived so late but it was very impressive, majestetic and beatiful from outside. Very well lit so that it looked really impressive in the dark night. Nice small streets and a good number of restaurant within the castle area and even more in the vincinity. The city deserves more visitors.
