If you visit Lugo you are likely going to visit the walls. They are a must visit/walk. We accessed by the Cathedral via an easy ramp. The top is quite wide and is an easy stroll of about 2/2.5 km. You see both inside and outside of the town. Some good bits and some depressing derelict bits.
Watch out for the two massive wall paintings on the outside. I hope you get to see the various school playtimes as you walk around - quite entertaining.
One warning - there are no barriers to a fairly substantial drop either side (short walls at best) and we agreed the young children on the loose could easily fall.

Lugo was a remarkably interesting city. The surrounding wall is the first highlight to view the old city. Its a significant structure with easy access at numerous points and provides orientation for a more detailed walk at vround level. Well preserved and well maintained.

The Roman walls of Lugo are the best preserved in Spain. This is a unique object. UNESCO has recognized World heritage twice. First initially as Roman walls in 2000, and then included when expanded in the object "Roads to Santiago de Compostela" in 2015. It is clear that part of the wall has been reconstructed, but most of the 2117 m is original. 46 of the 86 towers are fully preserved, 39 - partially. Not bad for 2 millennia! The safety of the gate is less. The Porta Miñá and la Falsa gates remember the passage of the Roman legions, the others were created later-up to the beginning of the XX century. The most important thing is that access to the walls is free! This is the best way to explore the Old city. Just walk along the walls. Few UNESCO sites allow this. Try it on the great wall of China, the sister city of the Lugo walls.

Amazing complete wall around the old part of the city. Several access staircases. Many morning locals exercising on 2.2 km circuit. Nice views of the city, cathedral, and ancient roof-tops.

This is the Roman wall that surrounds downtown Lugo. It was built upon later to make it bigger but it still retains it Roman look. Lots of people walk or do a daily run there. Good to see the city below.

The city of Lugo is a well kept secret.
First of all we will start off with the walls. They are about 2.5km in circumference and about 10-15 metres high. Most of what you see was built in the Roman times. Additions have been made over the centuries. The walls area world heritage site. Lugo is the only completely walled city in Europe with intact fortifications dating back so far. Yes other cities have intact defences but this really stands out.
The rest of the old quarter of the city is just as quaint.
Other places to visit in Lugo are; The Museum, which is free. The cathedral, again free. The house of Mosaics, again free. The Roman thermal baths below a modern Spa hotel, again entrance is free.
Is this free city? Could be!

We came to this region in Spain to see most of its world heritage sites. This is in the UNESCO's World Heritage Lists like some other edifices and walled cities in Galicia.

This Muralla is said as the finest example of a fortification in the whole western Europe. It has its original five gates but some more were constructed later. Interesting to note that up the walls people are strolling around enjoying the view or just for fun. The width of the walls is around 4.2 meters and the height of the walls varies between 8 and 12 meters.

A well preserved "Muralla" for everyone to see and enjoy from today and the next generations to come. We were glad we came over here.

Lugo has cleverly maintained its Roman walls, and the 2.2 kilometer walk on top of them provides a great place to exercise for the locals and a beautiful view of the old city for the tourists.

Simply amazing, both the walls and the city of Lugo. I have now travelled through almost the entirety of Spain and by far one of my favourite memories. The grandness of the walls is amazing, yet they are subtle. Go, and enjoy. Ensure you stay within the walls and experience all it brings.

The old city center of Lugo is an interesting mix of preserved history and urban blight. The walk around the old city give you a great observation point of both. Much of the old city center is restore/vibrant, but there is also a fair amount that is abandoned and in disrepair.

The walls themself are a spectacular example of preserved Roman work (3rd century), just wish the old city they encircle were the same.
