Getting to know the city with my wife and her uncle, we arrived at Plaza Santa MarĆa where he showed us this Roman pool from the 4th century AD. He told us that since 2011 it had been like this so that people could see it but that it had already been discovered in the 60s but it was kept hidden for preservation until 2004 and then opened so that they could observe it. It seems to me that the glass was a little dirty and that means that you cannot see this pool well but it is very good to still be able to admire this type of construction today

World over, when pieces of the past poke their noses up, blessed are they who give a rat's patootie and preserve the past. Athens, Rome, Egypt, etc. have found ways to incorporate the past into the present.

Sometimes history finds a benefactor to stand in the way of the bulldozers of history. We cannot pave ALL of paradise to put up a parking lot (big nod to Joni Mitchell).

Thankfully, this glimpse into the past is preserved and 3,000 years of what-was can still be here-and-now.

The ā€œPiscina Romanaā€ or the Roman pool you can see on the ā€œPlaza Santa Maria. Do not expect to see a swimming pool, it is about 10 square meters and is covered with glass to protect it from all influences. In the year 2004, some technicians from the Municipal Archaeology Service have located the pool and documented its exact location. They also found out that the pool should not be an isolated structure, and could be a part of a larger architectural complex. The state of conservation is only known through the photographs and drawings of the year 1960. At that time, it was sealed with a layer of sand and the fragmented mosaic fragments were transferred to the Provincial Museum. Interesting location in town.

You can see these Roman sites under the street through the glass just a quick thing as you walk around the city but not a must

The piscina is in the square around the cathedral and is visible through a glass panel in the floor. The piscina is well preserved and you get a decent view of the remains

This pool and its wonderful mosaics were uncovered in 1960 when paving work was being done in the Plaza de Santa Maria opposite the Cathedral and the Bishops Palace. They were then re-sealed under sand until a proper archaeological project was undertaken in 2004. They are now well displayed under glass for visitors to see. This may have been a Paleo-Christian baptistry pool, but more likely it was a small pool of cold water, belonging to a Roman frigidarium of a thermal complex or a domestic balneum.
