Cute outdoor trail with plants
Jul 2020
Unfortunately closed for the pandemic, we got to walk the short trail on the outside and read a few of the signs. A lot of the signs had been discolored by the sun.

Wonderful must-see exhibitis of endangered species!
Apr 2019 • Friends
I had a lovely time at the Desert Discovery Center! It's a small but beautifully maintained museum focusing on local animal and plant species. They are active in maintaining some of the only remaining members of endangered species of fish. There are great educational exhibits and a wonderful garden outside which includes a pond of endagered fish and turtles. The staff, especially Natia, were super helpful and spent a lot of time explaining the exhibits. AND....there's the second biggest meteorite ever found in the USA! An absolute must.

VERY SMALL BUT PLEASANT
Jan 2019 • Solo
I was visiting Barstow and saw the Desert Discovery Center as a place to see. It has the OLD WOMAN meteorite that is the second largest ever found in the US. Here is your chance to see an actual meteorite up close and it is huge...not the small chunks you might normally see.
This is a very small center. I was the only visitor at the time. I was warmly welcomed by the docent. She told me most of the animals were hibernating but there were some turtles to see. I am not sure where the animals were but there is a small garden outside. I wasn't sure if the garden extended outside.
I saw the OLD WOMAN and read about meteorites and my visit was short.
The docent mentioned school groups come so maybe there are more activities for them.
My visit was short but pleasant. It's not a place to go out of your way to visit but if you are in Barstow and have a few minutes, it's worth a visit.

I noticed the friendly justures as I came to the entrance of this center. You can take pictures right away. The 5 year olds love the pictures we took. Then we went through to see the wonderful turtles just around the doors. We watched as they swam and layer around there place. We also learned about lizards and some of the animals that roam around the deserts. And in the end there is a gift shop to take gifts home to the family.. nice for kids and those that love animals..

Stopped by to see The Old Woman Meteorite. The place was in remodeling construction. The workers were having lunch, so I snuck a peek. They have a nice walking path around building and a view of the valley. plenty of parking.

Great place to take kids to learn about the desert area around Barstow. It also has a walking fitness trail that will take you around the area with stops along the way to work out.

Good info, not too much here

Stopped on the way to Rainbow Basin Scenic area. Not too many exhibits but the meteorite was particularly interesting. The 2nd biggest ever found in the USA at about 3 tons weight. The staff was friendly and helpful with a few local questions. Also a large gift shop. I was hoping for more museum like displays to discover about the desert. Nice bathrooms.

You Must See The Old Woman
Jul 2016 • Solo
You must see the Old Woman Meteorite. It won't take long to just jump off the 15 and see this amazing meteorite. It is FREE but there is a great story to see and some other information about some local points of interest.
