Hidden gem. Also, a Santa Fe historical trail stop! Able to get gems, see historical facts and artifacts. Also, archeology discoveries from surrounding areas. A map where to dig gems on your own. Tons of ideas to do. Only needed more time there!

Easy parking and several other areas on opposite corners to see. One parking sees three.

Lots of things to see inside and larger items are outside and easy to find. Well worth you time to stop and see. Lost of history here

This is a great little museum just off the freeway in old town Barstow. The museum has a very good collection of Mojave Indian artifacts and lots of local mineral displays. This is an older museum but the displays are still very interesting and relevant. They also have some information on the mining that went on all over the high desert with models of the 20 mule team wagons that hauled ore to Barstow. The staff was very informative and answered all of our questions. We spent a little over an hour at this museum and will come back if time allows.

We were looking for a museum to enjoy briefly on Christmas Eve and set our expectations low, but were pleasantly surprised. We saw cool rocks, mining history, desert and Native American history, local history, and a massive collection of WWII news articles. There are a few hands-on things for kids but mostly this museum is for adults. Worth an hour or so of your time!

Stop by this to see some of the local history of the area. Great rock collections and mining plus other old items. It is very close to I15 so you can hop right on or off when going. The docents were excellent and very helpful. Good for kids. Donations are accepted.

This is one of those museums that you could spend a long time in, just taking in all the exhibits. Even if you don't come from Barstow or have no interest in it it's still worth a visit to see the exhibits. It's important the past is kept alive & they sure have done this with interesting displays. I take my hat off to those who look after this place & keep it open for the likes of us who are passing by. Keep up the good work folks.

We stopped in Barstow to break up a drive from Las Vegas to the SF area. Found this museum on google and had to stop since we love small local museums. We were greeted by the volunteer staff who gave an introduction to the collections and local history. Then we explored on our own the exhibits on geology, native cultures, mining, railroads, the military (Barstow is near Ft. Irwin), and NASA (NASA has a deep space communication center north of Barstow). For a small museum they have a huge selection of books on related topics and we bought two on geology. After our visit the volunteer encouraged us to make use of the museum's picnic tables (located under lovely shade trees in front of the museum) even though she was closing up for the day. Definitely worth planning a stop.

Like the desert, it's a different kind of museum. Obviously a labor of love by people product from people who want to tell their story to visitors. The small building is stuffed with an almost bewildering assortment of everything from Coke bottles to antediluvian displays of prehistoric mammals. My favorite was the story of folk artist Calvin Black who made over 80 large dolls to entertain his wife. My wife had fun buying small artifacts for grandchildren. Highly worth more than the price of admission: free!

Across the street is a huge fire fighter helmet sculpture we were planning to go to..we ended up stopping here to stretch...thus is an adorable museum...very nice and helpful staff. They have glow in the dark exhibits and great vintage road games for $2 or less..the kids loved it and we didn't leave poor. Definitely a place we will go again.
