Santoña & Santander: Cantabrian Breeze

We will depart Bilbao early morning, direction Santoña to arrive at this little fishing village. There, we will visit a traditional canned anchovy’s company. We will learn about the manufacturing process of this high quality Cantabrian product while discovering the importance of the canning industry in the town and its evolution during the twentieth century.
Then, we will go to Santander, capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria, a cozy and quiet coastal city, with a wide bay facing south whose beauty has made it considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. We will make a panoramic visit to the city and have free time to enjoy it.
Return to Bilbao and finish about 2:30pm.

We loved the beach which is so NOT a typical Costa - a quiet, sheltered bay, beautiful sand backed by dunes - and no debris washed into the cliffs / rock pools at the ends of the beach

Lovely beach but the water can be dangerous. All good surfing beaches are hazardous to swimmers and there are rip tides. Warm water, its.an hours walk up and down. Blue flag, lifeguards are present.Clean with stunning views. Well worth a visit or in our case staying for a few days. Not a lot of cafes/ restauants to service the beach but enough.

This beach is away from the main town of Santona and feels quite isolated, especially with the large prison at one end, where there’s also a camping ground. Visited on a blustery day early March and the only people taking advantage of the wind were a few hardy windsurfers. The beach is long and wide and it was pleasing to see local council workers raking areas and shovelling sand from paths where it had been blown. Not sure what it’s like here in summer as I couldn’t see much in the way of cafes or bars

A long sandy beach with boardwalks for easy access. Cliffs at both ends. Popular with surfers, with surf schools adjacent. A few shops and cafes nearby.
