I think these painted blocks were hauled in and placed near the boat docks as a sort of defensive move regarding other ships "sneaking" into port. The blocks need a bit of repainting and they are colorful. Walk out and have a look--the sea air is refreshing, too!

It gives the pier a different look, and a good look, by the way. It turns an ordinary part of the town into a piece of art.

Why don’t all harbour authorities do this painting to their supporting boulders, great fun and effective.

We fall in love with Llanes. So many places to visit. Very nice people all around, you can walk free.

Imagine this being allowed in the UK! Artist Augustin Ibarrola has brought a touch of colour and fun to the protective blocks of the new harbour in Llanes, a fishing town famous for its rugged landscape, beaches and coves.
The colour is gradually wearing off and the arty sea gulls love it!
They should have also let him loose on the new, bland white, cubic port building....
Enjoy walking further round the harbour and seeing more of this fascinating town.

The port of Llanes found a clever way to liven up the heavy concrete breakers that protect the long jetty of the port; they hired the Spanish Basque painter and sculptor Agustin Ibarrola to paint the enormous concrete blocks with colorful themes and motifs which makes the walk along the port dock quite interesting.

When does graffiti become art? When some town council is daft enough to pay for it I suppose.
These might have looked ok when the were new and fresh, but now they look like pieces of wall from some demolished council block that someone has chucked into the sea.
And the really sad thing is that they will just get tattier and tattier as the colour fades further.

A fairly nice landmark of Llanes with great views and most restaurants and shops in close distance.
Must visit if you are in the area.

I can imagine when these were freshly painted they might have had some impact but now graffiti, sun, sea and seagulls have faded and ruined any attraction they may have had. Visit Llanes, it's very nice - walk the clifftop and have coffee in the pretty town, but don't go on the basis of this 'art'.

We saw these from multiple angles as we walked around the port of Llanes so one would keep seeing them. Really not much to look at. And didn't find anything significant or historical about them either.
