About
Andalusia's mountainous Alpujarra region features Spain's highest peak, Mulhacén, rising to a height of 3,478 meters. It provides perhaps the best walking and hiking country in Andalucia and boasts many picturesque villages for the less adventurous traveler.

We spent a few days at Christmas, staying in an apartment called “Huerta la Niña Arenas”, in Orgiva, highly recommended by the way. We visited many charming towns in the area: Capileira, Bubion, Pampaneira…. All of them are beautiful, it is worth visiting this region.

As it is very close to Granada we have decided to spend one day trip exploring las alpujarras and it was our best decision. We had a rented car which made everything much easier. Our first stop point was Lanjaron, where we visited the moorish castle and had amazing views, and there we decided to have lunch, and ate the most deliciousus oranges in our life, apparently oranges from this regions are very famous:D We got them directly from locals who picked them up from a tree.
After that we have visited Pampaniera and Bubion where we had a coffee and enjoyed typical white house architecture with very specific chimneys. After that we headed for Trevelez - the highest village in Spain, with very famous Jamon!!! very lovely:D and it was definetly a funny trip starting at sunny Lanjaron ending up in snow covered Trevelez.
We took another road back to Granada and it was one of the most beautiful drives we ever had:D

On the recommendation of the lovely tourist offfice staff in Granada - we took a bus into the Sierra Nevada to the town of Capilierra and walked (thankfully) down the mountain, through Bubion, to Pampaneira. These three form part of a group known as the White Villages - for obvious reasons.
It was a wonderful way to spend a day and very easy to arrange. Buses in Spain are cheap, comfortable and easy to find and the bus line staff/drivers etc are helpful and very patient with extremely bad novice Spanish.
We followed the cleary marked GR7 long distance foot path down the mountain. This is an easy path and only needs trainers to manage this particular section - not sandals or thongs though. We stopped for lunch in Bubion in a lovely tavern whose name (unfortunately) escapes me but it is perched overlooking the valley below and not hard to find - although not much to look at from the outside
The whole walk took no more than three very meanderish hours and the bus ride about 2 hours each way - this part was practically another tour in itself as the journey is stunning.
Actually visitied in June 2010 and forgot to post review.

The Alpujarra region of Spain is the most breath taking place I have seen. The mountains the steep sided gorges and pretty villages clinging to the hillsides cannot really be captured by a camera. Take the mountain bus from Capileira ( book in advance) through the National Park to the foothills of Mulhacen the highest mountain on the iberian Peninsula. Go prepared as it is cold and quite often windy when you get out and start walking. You can walk to the summit of Mulhacen and back in time to get the 4 pm bus back or you can walk back into the Poquiera gorge following the old Moorish water channels (acequias) or even over to the 7 lakes and then walk down into the next valley and catch the Alsa service bus back to Capileira at 5.30pm.
Walking in these mountains staying in villages at 4-5000 feet u is an experience I have not tired of as yet. we don't hire cars so we travel from Malaga by local bus to Granada and then change buses in Granada for the final leg of the journey. So really more accessible than you imagine at first sight. Enjoy!

I dont think I will ever tire of this area - the pretty Alpujarran white villages sheltering on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Many interesting walks and rides (I found it useful to buy a book detailing these), such a stunning and welcoming place. One of my favourites.....

The Alpujarras reaches from Lanjaron tot Ugijar (former "capital" of the Alpujarras). A variety of activities you can see and do :mountain walking along the GR7 from Granada tot Trevelez, or shorter from Pampineira tot Bubion and Capileira. Or just visit the last three white villages
which are a live with Morish influences. Orgiva has a tradition of the seventies.
By car you can take the northern route from Trevelez tot Ugijar, more adventerous or the southern altenative from Orgiva via Cadiar to Ugijar. Spectacular views.

I traveled to Sierra Nevada with some friends from a hostel in Granada. For us it was a matter of catching a bus and then walking the rest. We went in the peak of summer, so take lots of water to drink. Litres of water. I'm not kidding - it averaged 48 Celcius (118 Farenheit) and heatstroke and dehydration are real dangers. We walked over several suspension bridges which are in excellent condition and fun to walk across. We swam under waterfalls there (where the water was freezing) walked over mountains. It was a really nice way to relax the mind after learning so much history in the town. We brought fresh fruit bough at a local market, a bread roll and jamon to eat on the way. There were parts which required holding onto grappling hooks to get around the mountain, so an element of dexterity is needed.
HOT TIP: Bring your cozzies (swimmers / bathers) so you can swim in the waterfalls and cool off.

Worth the drive. We spent most of a day walking around these beautiful unspoiled villages shopping and eating. You definitely feel as if you have stepped back in time. Great leather and jewelry (local) in Pampaneira. We also had a great lunch there. Highly recommended.

Las Alpujarras is to us one of the best locations in Spain. Far enough away from the costas (with Fish and Chips bars and crowds of drunken foreigners) and full of very authentic Andalucian culture. The scenery is suberb surrounded by mountains such as the Sierra Nevada and Contraviesa. If you are into wine try out the many bodegas or simply go to a local bar and enjoy 'una copa' with (often) free tapas. In winter, one has of course superb alpine skiing up in the Sierra Nevada (approached from the Granada side) or good cross country skiing in places like Puerta La Ragua (on the A 337). Summer offers horse riding, biking and masses of historical walking paths. I enjoy star gazing and this area is one of the best in Europe with very little light polution and great views of the southern sky.

During our stay in Granada we made a day-trip to Las Alpujarras. We took the bus to Capileira, from their we walked downhill to Pampaneira, where we took the bus back. The surrounding is absolutely beautiful, with wonderful views and lovely little white villages.
In Capileira, the bus dropped us next to the Tourist Office, where they had a map of the village, unfortunately not of the surrounding. From there we made a small walk through the village, and to the viewpoint, a bit west of it, from where you can see the Mulhacén. Back at the Tourist Office, we started our walk down to Pampaneira. It's relatively easy to find the walking trail. Take the stairs down behind the building. At the bottom, turn left, and pass a small fountain. After this the real path starts on the right. On the way down there are many photo opportunities of the beautiful valley. It's also nice to see the white villages in front and behind you. After about 1-1,5 hour, you reach the village of Bubion.
Just before reaching Bubion, the path connects to the main road. Bubion is a logical stop for a drink or a meal. In this place, the path to Pampaneira starts next to the church. There is a sign that says 'Pampaneira 1 KM', and although it's possible to see the village immediately, it takes about an hour via the winding trail to get there.
It's a relatively easy walk to do, as it's always going down. But it's good to have some experience in the mountains, as the path is sometimes very steep and not always well-maintained. It's also crossing some waterfalls and little rivers. But it's a great experience, so I would certainly recommend to do it.

Hello, my bf and I are looking to stay in Las Alpujarras for my birthday (southern slopes of Sierra Nevada). The location is described as near Pitres or Portugos. We’re going the first week in October and looking to spend the time in nature (some walks), some strolls in the towns, but would like to use the pool and bbq at the accommodation. We’re not expecting very hot but we’re hoping for some sun (20-23 degrees c). Does anyone know if this is the usual weather for this time? Any advice welcome :) thank you!

Hello, my wife and I will be traveling in the Alpujarra in February 2019. We land in Malaga on 2.12.19 and plan to spend two nights there before renting a car and driving to Orgiva. It has been a want of mine to visit the region for years, but neither of us has ever been before. We're planning on booking probably three nights in Orgiva and leaving the rest of the itinerary open. We fly out of Malaga on 2.27.19, and will spend at least one night there before leaving. We've purposely left the rest of the itinerary open, although we definitely plan to visit the Barranco de Poqueira area.
We're moderate hikers and will surely take at least some hikes, although maybe not day-long ones - TBD. We also adore Granada and may spend a day or two there depending on how it goes in the Alpujarra. Guadix is another possibility and so is driving over to the Grazalema area for a couple of days.
I share the above just to give you an idea of our interests. We would be very content to have ~ two weeks of 'slow travel' in the Alpujarra and a few fun days in nights in Malaga to bookend that.
Any advice, insights and/or recommendations anyone can offer about our visit during February would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nee, niet met een bus, de weg er naar toe is smal, zanderig met kuilen...prima met huurauto of privee taxi.
