East Atlanta is a great destination if you're looking for eclectic bars, restaurants and shops. Far less upscale than the Virginia Highlands, the area is casual and relaxed. While the Heaping Bowl has closed, the burgers and fried okra at the E.A.R.L. can't be missed. While there, you can enjoy cheap beer and good bands. Local gay bar Mary's has a fairly mixed crowd and offers karaoke on weekends. The Echo Lounge is a great place to hang out, as is the Flatiron. The neighborhood is still somewhat transitional, so not for those who are spooked by the occasional homeless person or grubby bar. I, however, have spotted a few celebrities hanging out in area dives.

The area has so much going for it. Great neighborhoods where people are active and involved. Has a variety of small shops and good places to eat. Close to everywhere via I-20 & 75.

It's a good place to walk around during the day and find a place to eat. Plenty of shops to visit and tagging everywhere. Part of the Atlanta scene if you want to know what it's like to live local.

We went there to get lunch before a flight home. The bagel place was great but eating outside I had to deal with a persistent loud panhandler for 10 minutes. Really wanted to walk and explore the neighborhood a bit but no, absolutely did not feel safe walking more than a block from the main intersection and I have decades of experience living/walking all hours around very marginal/edgy neighborhoods all over the US. On a positive note, the bars were tempting and there were several promising small places to catch live music.

Check out the Earl for live music, food and drinks. Argosy has a good beer selection and wood fired pizzas. Mary's is a fun gay bar to go to is you enjoy dancing.

There are some good restaurants and bars in the area. The Earl is an an East Atlanta Village experience and is better than you may think it would be based on the decor. Midway has one of the best patios and beer lists in town.

Went with a group after a Habitat build. Great fun dining out on a patio, then fun games of Bocce in the court right in the middle of everything. Would enjoy spending more time there

I love East Atlanta for what it is. It's a bit grungy, like Little Five Points. It's for the young or young at heart. A decent walking neighborhood, fun shops to poke your head into, but with some sketchy characters hanging out. Low end hip - some love it! Good music scene. Good bars. Not the safest place, but OK. If I had to pick one place to go for drinks or dinner, I would pick Argosy: amazing space, feels a bit like a beer garden. Very friendly staff and great food and totally safe. It's amazingly easy to get to, once you know what you are doing. Until then, make sure you have GPS. Taxis won't always know how to get there. If you only have one night in ATL, don't go here. Go to Decatur and start at the BrickHouse. Restaurants galore, great MARTA access, great pubs. If you do head toward East ATL, suggest you do not bring young kids....you won't be comfortable.
