About
The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in the Škofja Loka Castle, whose imposing exterior dominates the town below. The rich museum collections bear witness to the past and the present day of the territory along the Selška and Poljanska Sora rivers, which formed the Škofja Loka Dominion ruled by the Bishops of Freising, Bavaria, back in the day (973–1803). The Museum's archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sports collections, as well as an open-air museum present the cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area and also place it in the wider Slovenian and European contexts.

easy, enjoyable, friendly locals, cheaper than Ljubljana, Kranj or Bled

Charming little town, nice for families and for single or couple travellers as well.
There is cute little playground with view of castle and square where you can have a nice cup of coffe... Or you can get lost in history while wondering through town with long art and craft tradition, so you can get a good deal for local products as well :-) From the castle on the hill (5 min walk) there is a stunning view, if you have time visit the museum as well. It is a great peek into medieval times and past glory. Round the castle there are many paths in beautiful nature and views worth seeing. If you have time and own transportation head to Poljanska valley and Selska valley.

Make Škofja Loka and Pustal a day
Oct 2019 • Solo
A nice “old town” that is great to explore. The Škofja Loka Castle took me 3 hours ( I’m a geek). The women at the ticket desk are amazingly informative and friendly. There are quite a few vignettes of history for the castle; and, there are historical exhibits on the grounds. Pustal is just across the second bridge and a great learning walk. Take an early bus if coming from another city or town. Not wheel chair accessible at all. I use a cane and there are stairs to conquer.

Excellent and well preserved
Sep 2019 • Couples
Unlike Ljubljana castle, this has been preserved in an authentic manner. The museum is interesting, diverse and cultural. Much better than the one on Ljubljana

Interesting escape from the rain
Jul 2019 • Friends
It was raining when we arrived so we took refuge in the building. The museum has lots of interesting exhibits and we wandered around for 30-40 minutes. At €5 per entry, it was affordable. What is nice is that you could open the windows and take pictures of the lovely views below without having to brave the elements in the garden just outside. Good experience.

Well set out museum with a good mix of exhibits really well presented
Jul 2019 • Couples
A surprising find as just expecting a small provincial museum but we really enjoyed over two hours strolling through the different galleries. Lots of comfortable chairs and varied ways to present the information and exhibits. Some was just in Slovenian but plenty else to take in . I really liked the rooms laid out with furniture of the time- you could imagine what it was like to live there . Delightful people on reception , very laid back place . Don't miss looking at the Crypt which has been imaginatively set out.

Surprisingly large and interesting museum
Jun 2019 • Couples
Having walked up to the castle from the town on a bakingly hot day we weren't sure what to expect. The lady on reception was delightful, beckoned us towards drinks of water and explained what see. The entrance fee - 5€ per adult. There are two main floors of exhibits including special exhibitions of historical events affecting the town and many rooms of varied items. These included antique furniture, agricultural equipment, shoe and hat making as well as more. There was also a room of stuffed animals (not my thing) and archaeology. For a small village this was a huge museum. Very interesting and well worth visiting.

Beautiful restored castle overlooking charming medieval town
Jun 2019 • Couples
This is one of the most beautiful castles in Slovenia. We enjoyed the short walk up to it before walking around the grounds (for free) to enjoy the view point, the mill and the hay barn with an old snow sledge in it.
The views over the house roofs towards the Alps are simply stunning

Charming town
May 2019
Skofja Lola is a charming little town. It’s not far from Ljubljana. If you’re an explorer, you can just take a local bus at the train/bus station. The scenery is beautiful. You will be rewarded by this old town for sure.

Rich Collection and Unique Atmosphere
Jan 2019 • Solo
With the reconstruction and renovation the castle and the museum collection tells a lot about Slovenia history and the local culture in Skofja Loka . With the different floors you see different sections and exhibitions. I strongly suggest to visit and spend min 90 mins. At the exit you have this beautiful cosy place with a fireplace and tablets where you can expand your knowledge and digest the valuable information you’ve seen. The view from the windows were stunningly beautiful. Enjoy your time in this old petite city Skofja Loka.

Great exhibition
Jan 2019
There are lots of interesting exhibitions in there. However, there is renovation at th upper part of the building, so we were not allowed to go there. However, we got discount for that.
