About
The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in the Škofja Loka Castle, whose imposing exterior dominates the town below. The rich museum collections bear witness to the past and the present day of the territory along the Selška and Poljanska Sora rivers, which formed the Škofja Loka Dominion ruled by the Bishops of Freising, Bavaria, back in the day (973–1803). The Museum's archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sports collections, as well as an open-air museum present the cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area and also place it in the wider Slovenian and European contexts.

Charming little town, nice for families and for single or couple travellers as well.
There is cute little playground with view of castle and square where you can have a nice cup of coffe... Or you can get lost in history while wondering through town with long art and craft tradition, so you can get a good deal for local products as well :-) From the castle on the hill (5 min walk) there is a stunning view, if you have time visit the museum as well. It is a great peek into medieval times and past glory. Round the castle there are many paths in beautiful nature and views worth seeing. If you have time and own transportation head to Poljanska valley and Selska valley.

I found this to be a lovely place with beautiful authentic grounds amongst the small and beautiful town. We ended up hanging out in the large grassy arena and just soaking up everything that this place had to offer.
There is alot to say so allow yourself some time. Walk down into the main fair to have something delicious to drink or eat.

Skofja Loka itself is a magic little medieval town with different coloured buildings. The castle is lovely and very informative of the area but seemed more like a museum than a castle. Loved the town though

Thought it would be more castle. It was more a museum. I wish there was a translation available for some of the rooms. Especially the war room. I think it would have been very interesting.

Škofja Loka castle, situated on the top of the hill, has a beautiful view over the old town. Did not get inside as we were short of time. But there is an open air exhibition at its back yards about the way of living in Slovenia back in history. Worth going up the steps to view the panoramic scenery.

It is worth to hike up just to admire the castle from close and have some nice views to Skofja Loka and souroundings. There are nice paths going all the way to Lubnik. If you like museums - than visit the castle as well.

I like Škofja Loka castle with a museum very much,... From there, as it is situated on the top of the hill is a beautiful view over the old town beeneth the building. The climb itself is not difficult and it is worth walking few steps. The back yards show an open air exhibition about the way of living in Slovenia back in the history. The museum collection in the castle is well prepared and very informative. For me it has also a special meaning as connected with famous Slovenian novel "Visoška kronika" by Ivan Tavčar,..., the novel is translated into German, Italian, French, Serbo-Croatina, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak and Bulgarian (but sadly not English).

A nice “old town” that is great to explore. The Škofja Loka Castle took me 3 hours ( I’m a geek). The women at the ticket desk are amazingly informative and friendly. There are quite a few vignettes of history for the castle; and, there are historical exhibits on the grounds. Pustal is just across the second bridge and a great learning walk. Take an early bus if coming from another city or town. Not wheel chair accessible at all. I use a cane and there are stairs to conquer.

With the reconstruction and renovation the castle and the museum collection tells a lot about Slovenia history and the local culture in Skofja Loka . With the different floors you see different sections and exhibitions. I strongly suggest to visit and spend min 90 mins. At the exit you have this beautiful cosy place with a fireplace and tablets where you can expand your knowledge and digest the valuable information you’ve seen. The view from the windows were stunningly beautiful. Enjoy your time in this old petite city Skofja Loka.

We visited totally on spec, just passing through. Fell in love with the town and the castle/museum. There are exhibits on a wide range of subjects, from history and archaeology, to WW2 to arts and crafts, ie lace and basket making.
